Default Model Y Orders opened Today...

... And there have been roughly 16,000 orders for the car today. Is Ford going to bring a car into this market? The Mach E would've been great for our market. I feel like they are missing opportunities.

Tesla are still struggling with Production due to the Shanghai lockdowns but have returned to full capacity now apparently.

I've ordered one. I wish there was a Mach E or Lightning to order. Why are Ford dragging the heels on EVs in Australia!?!

$74k? I suppose they have to make hay while the sun shines, but I'll wait for the Renault.

Pretty competitive when you think the Model 3 is only $5 k cheaper.

You think it's too high? I think it's just right and is the cheapest Mid Size EV on the market undercutting the Ioniq 5. It's cheaper than the smaller XC40, GLA, Polestar and so on.

Either way, about 16,000 people put money down today for one on the first day of orders. Surely there is a market for them and Ford are missing a trick here.

I knew nothing much about the Y TBH, it looks like it should be a smaller car than the 3, but in reality it's kinda a taller 3, so in that respect the pricing makes sense.

I thought Tesla were going to be a doing a small runabout at some stage? But it appears they've put that on hold :( This was what I was hanging out for for my wife, it makes no sense to spend $70k on a runabout.

Because overseas governments have placed emission targets/regs and maybe offered buyer incentives (carrot & stick) that compel auto makers to offer EV's sooner and so are sending all their stock to these countries where penalties or incentives make selling easier or necessary to meet the targets.

Add to that EV infrastructure that still lags behind. Then add on top of all that issues with component shortages and Ford Europe and just about all other brands would rather supply their own EU markets as much as possible.

I think at least one of our next vans could be an E-Transit Custom as a range around 200-300km per day would easily cover it's delivery needs and I would save $150 in diesel per week....and the current Vic Gov business incentive to put solar panels on factory roofs would mean even if I took out the interest free loan for the 1/3 out of pocket I incur it's cheaper than paying for diesel per week.

We'll never be told publicly however I think it's Ford Europe that doesn't treat Ford Aust fairly with allocations as I think the locals would take as much of everything if available.

Well this conversation went south quickly but yes, hard to defend a situation where
Ford Europe looks after Europe and sends us whatever is left over production/ exports.

The only reason we’re plugged into Ford Europe is because of UK being RHD otherwise we’d
struggle to get anything at all. It’s to that point now anyway, either the vehicles are overpriced
or just unobtainable. I think it’s time to press Dearborn for RHD Bronco Sport, Maverick & Mach E.
Bronco Sport and Maverick are/will be supplied to USA as affordable hybrids
that build on those Ranger
and Everest sales.Mustang Mach E in RHD is jus the kind of vehicle Australia needs as a counterpoint
to the Tesla Y, it built in China so no reason they can’t to right hookers as well.

Yes, the Model Y is a SUV version of the Model 3 much like the Territory was to Falcon. It's taller, wider and longer wheel base than the Model 3. It competes in that GLC, X3, Q5 size market.

The smaller rumoured Model 2 is the city run about that is a while away still.

With massive global response to 3 and Y, there’s absolutely no reason to consider building a low profit 2.

I know it's an anachronism, but just the slightest hint of a grille would do wonders for the frontal appeal of the 3 and the Y.

EDIT - it's a thing apparently

Yes, they can't produce enough to meet demand as it is.

Whilst we don't have Federal incentives, there are State based ones that Tesla are taking full advantage of now. Add that LCT moved to $85k for fuel efficient cars, that has dropped their prices quite a bit.

The first gen Model S had a grill but it was later updated to not have one. The model S does without a grill but has a small opening that could still be classified as a grill. The front end of the 3 and Y put function over looks. Some of the other grills that are blanked out look horrid on some cars; no grill is a better look.

I get that Ford Australia is hamstrung to some extent on supply, but surely they must see the number of people who are jumping on the Electric Jesus bandwagon with all these orders and want a piece of that?? They should be banging on the doors of anyone they can in Ford Europe/USA to get access to the Ford EV's down under.... There are alot of people who just buy Tesla's because that's the only real option in most segments...

Unfortunately, Jim Hackett didn’t think battery supply would be a problem so never arranged enough,
now they can’t build the damn things anyway…what a fouled up situation….

Default Model Y Orders opened Today...

Tesla also quietly dumped cybertruck from the order books in Australia and the rest of the world outside North America.
What is it, 4 years late now?

Ford release and build real cars. Not vapourware.
Ford is also investing Billions in EV and battery manufacturing. It’s all coming.

Because their order book is full till 2027. There is no need to take any more orders. All reservations are still in play.

GigaTexas is only just coming online. They are a startup.

They are making a million cars a year now. Ford even are quoted as saying that it was silly that people didn't take Tesla seriously and are even looking to adopt their sales model.

Yep, I'm one of those buyers. Literally nothing else in the market to compete on Range, Price and battery tech.

Audi Etron SUV is actually smaller inside the cabin to the Model Y, as is the EQC and iX3. They all offer less range as well.

Because they're always Johnny come lately in our market, they've never been on the front foot with anything with all the competition being first to market here in Australia.

You could say the same thing with the F150, GM and RAM have had the drop on Ford for a few years before the F150 and become established.

I feel like they do good product but they're very conservative and always hanging back to see what others do in AUS/NZ first, so they miss the marketing opportunities and the early adopters that come with being first to market.

Big opportunity on the table in AUS/NZ to establish themselves in a fledgling market and win over some customers, who wouldn't traditionally be shopping with Ford.

Shame, but the marketing department at Ford Australia has always been non existent to poor at the end of the day.

I reckon Ford Australia is just a retirement farm for the executive alphabet crew they're just bums on seats keeping them warm on the transition to retirement or other opportunities, there doesn't really seem to be any drive there aside from Ford Australia's engineering department, they're champions lead by a goose.

True, however I was leaning more to emissions levels and policies like no new petrol or diesel sales in 20xx by some countries or even cities which means carmakers have to scramble to get those markets supplied and in their brands asap or know they will definitely be buying elsewhere.

A case in point, the E-Transit and E-Transit Custom pure EV's are out or soon to be released as they are huge sellers in ice form for Ford in UK and EU, government regs require EV vehicles by law very soon and so buyers their get first "rights".

With increases in home shopping, I hope more delivery services look at BEV vans as a positive choice in reducing total vehicle costs, it think that’s the way commercial sales can be increased…it has to make sense to people running a business but I suspect that lower maintenance costs and less planned and unplanned down time could be big pluses.
