Opinions come from every direction... plus the hands that seek out the pregnant tummy too (very invasive for some women).

Firstly... Congratulations!

Read books and plenty of 'em. But the one I just finished last night, and wished that I had read much sooner, is a book called The Mommy Myth about the idealisation of motherhood. Very interesting.

Go with the gut feelings you will get, take on advice but sort through what sits right with you. Don't let people push you around and tell you what is "right" for the baby... it's just their opinions. And they can be wrong (for example, my 11 yo daughter was in agony for three weeks. Paediatrician said it was constipation. I didn't believe him, and kept pushing. Discovered from my naturopath/chiropractor that her back was out... after a course of herbals and a few clicks, the pain disappeared. Constipation. Yeah right!).

Also learn and read as much as you can about the birth process so you are utterly prepared. And learn to speak up if you disagree with anything that is happening midlabour. For example, I had organised for my dr to come to the hospital... but she had gone on holidays the day before and her partner came in. The first thing she said was "I'm missing my violin recital for this" in a grumpy pished off voice. Then and there I hated her, and everytime she came near me I threw up. It was only afterwards that I found out I could've told her to f$%# off (the midwife asked me why I hadn't!!!). I felt totally at the whim of the medical profession and it was quite horrifying.

Last bit that I can think of... don't take your child to the dr at the slightest sign of a sniffle. It's just a cold. There's not much they can do about viruses!

And have fun.

there is some good points there bindi, another word of advice, dont listen to everything the mother craft nuses tell you because alot of them are doing what the medical institutions are telling them and they also follow what the flavour of the month in child rearing. Use your own instincts because they are better then theirs. Also do not forego immunisations.

While we're on advice:

- Teach the baby to fight. An aggressive baby is a safe baby. Cootchee-cootchee-coo from old ladies at Coles? F#ck off!

- At the earliest possible interval (crawling/grasping stage), teach the baby to fetch beer. If it's a girl, this training will stand her in good stead in years to come.

- As Bindi said, don't take the baby to the doctor at the first sign of a sniffle. Vets are much cheaper.

In all seriousness, I wish you both the best.

Classic, also another good one to teach them is when in the middle of the supermarket aisle and making sure father is present, Make the child at the top of their lungs yell out... Dad farted. Its always a goody. Aint that right casper.

I'll have to teach my daughter that one when she is a bit older Mrs Casper. But I think Matt would find it very amusing if she did that, I think he would encourage it. He is trying to teach her to "Pull daddys finger"... LOL

they are a laugh my son is fascinated with womens bums . he grabs them and embarrasses me . but then again hes not doing anything more than i want too . so good on him.
secondly the women wont like this . but every man will agree. your wife is about to go through a time when she will drive you crazy don't worry this is normal . i think it is a proven fact that women lose about 10 IQ points in the last trimester. and man they go wierd.and stupid . theyre reasoning and practicality become non existant. i'll give you one example. when my wife was 9 weeks pregnant we were on holidays. at 8 o'clock in the morning we were having a before breakfast swim in the pool the bar was opening up she wanted a pina colada. i went to the bar and asked for a NON ALCOHOLIC PINA COLADA. THE barman said they only sell alcoholic ones . OK MY WIFE SAID I'LL HAVE THAT ..over my dead body was my reply wwhich ruined the entire day.the moral of the story here is my wife doesn't drink . even now.you see what i mean.

You'd have to be mad to marry an AFF member... Can you imagine it? Loud cars in and out at strange hours, weekends wasted cruising and watching V8 Super Taxi's, coming downstairs at 3am and finding 10 blokes and 2500 empty beer bottles in the garage...

Hi all

Well the day arrived when Lucas entered the world. He came a day early, Thursday May 18th at 9:30am. Jo did amazingly well, labour was only 6 hours. Had some complications but the doctors acted quickly and sorted her out. Recovering well now.

Life will not be the same, but i already know it's for the better.

first bath...

Very cosey...

First day at home...

Well done and Congratulations! I suggest you learn to take nanna naps in the afternoon to ensure adequate sleep Get some in the bank for when you cant sleep in (My Boy just turned 1!!!) Life will never be the same, But as they grow, and you can see them develloping, its the most awesome thing ever Oh, and if you are concerned because they dont do something in line with the text books, dont stress, no book can teach you the complexity of being a parent, and learning about your child

Congrats mate. Couldnt see the pics but I am sure he is adorable.

Dont listen to all the horror stories mate, its not all bad. Hehe.

Welcome to another young Ford lad I presume? We had one who is now 6 weeks old.

Oh and dont worry, the meconium (green/black tar stuff) only lasts for a day or too, so dont panic. And its not that bad.

Well done to you and your wife, hope she is ok too!

Jac

Congrats. Children are something you'll never regret doing ;) When's the next one coming 2-3 is a good age I think. I've got 2 one is 7(just turned) and the other is 3. They keep me very amused at times. I think I've got a good age gap between my two.

I took my 3yo son to his 2nd drag meet but it was the 1st time he's seen me race on the 20th of this month. While I raced he had his uncle and two of my close mates look after him. He had a ball.

Thanks all.

Yes it is a great time in my life.

Apart from the initiall worry with the complications at the end of the birth (Jo needed an eupidural after the birth and a blood transfusion), all is well now.

I stayed in hospital with my wife at all times and was attending to all Lucas' needs as Jo wasnt able too. It was still a pleasure and a proud moment to see even the simple things that make a difference to the bub.

He's only 5 days old now and is already making us laugh histerically.

Jeeees Guys shut up .....your making me jealous

Mrs Ringo and I have a trip to Europe planned before we have kids. Europe i happening at the end of the year so kiddies could be coming as early as end of 2007.

On a somber note people be thankful that having kids has gone well for you all. Friends of ours got told yesterday that they will need IVF and even then the chance are no better than 50/50. They have been trying for over 2 years. IVF is $2500 a session and you get back $800 on Medicare. To rub salt into the wound her sister has had 2 accidental pregnancies and is extremely unhealthy.

Mrs Ringo is now paranoid that it will happen to us.
