I had accents back in the early 2000s, and bought them off my work after being used for a while. I could hit more like 210km indicated, a good 200 gps. Thing is it would hit near 195 indicated so about 185, but if you went downhill could get another 20 and when the road flattens could hold the speed! These were the 1.5dohc ones.

Though its got 280,000km on it and given its been abused its whole life since new it probably only has 20KW at the engine instead of the 57KW it had when it was new |

Reminds me of this saga, back in 2004...
Vanessa Bridges was one of the first to challenge the accuracy of fixed speed cameras on Melbourne's Western Ring Road six months ago. Vanessa's car was clocked at 158km/h by a fixed camera—a speed she knew was well beyond the 4-cylinder Datsun 120Y which had been putting along for close to 30 years. After unsuccessfully querying the fine, Vanessa faced a mandatory loss of licence, but rather than trusting the technology she sought another opinion. "We got the car tested not only for the maximum speed it could go, which we found out it could only be 117km/h, but we also did a test on the actual speedometer and we found that when the needle was on 100 the car was actually only doing 90 km/h". |

Once tailed a Daewoo Barina at about 195 clicks from southern NSW all the way over the Vic border. Whoever was piloting the thing must have had balls of steel and a pocket full of luck, no police pulled him over. Developed a newfound respect for Daewoo Barinas after that night

I'm doubting it too. 2 of us took an Accent around Bathurst (partly closed track - motorsport day) and we flogged it hard down conrod. It hit the limiter in 4th at just under 180, but when you put it in 5th, it ran out of torque and would actually slow down to about 175 - and this was with the downhill assistance!
You would need a good tailwind on a flat or downhill road to get it to go faster (in 5th) than 179-180km/h, as the aero drag was simply too much for the one I was in. |

I was often passed by little buzzboxes on the motorways in Europe, this speed is nothing surprising. I feel sorry for the guy, he was driving at a speed that is quite common in Europe on a safe road, yet here he's "reckless".
As for 2 litre engines? No sweat, try 365 km/h! http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/110...eville/image-1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VepuW_oR2Vw

According to todays' paper it was a women driver (a Belgium tourist).... and there are no hills to speak of on the Nullarbor near Norseman where she was caught.

Having seen the way that the eurotrash drive, I'd say its possible. If not 191km/hr then it wouldn't be too far off.

it can be done quite easy. Only problem is the brakes on the accent would struggle to pull it up at that speed

Cmon lads, these new accents aren't too bad. I just purchased a new 2016 one for my wife and I would have to admit it is built better, tighter than our falcons / commodores. Performance, well I would say 190 km/h maybe a struggle but they are certainly nippy around town.

Most cars don't have the brakes to pull up at those speeds.

My first (registered) car, a 1985 KB Laser Ghia (5spd) used to regularly go off the clock (180) and keep going between home and wanneroo. Had a twin carb 1.5l (Mazda engine, Capri carbies) with a fully sick dual pod set up. I'm sure technology has advanced enough that a vehicle that's got a few decades of technology on the old laser can hit 191.

Man if the guy can do 190 in that I say pull him over, give him a six pack and prize and let him be on his way,
Most shopping cars that I have driven would have struggled at 100mph. |

Absolutely no doubt it would. People still seem to be stuck in the eighties when "small hatchback" meant "slow as a wet week"...

Most run of the mill cars in Australia are limited to 180kph via ecu and before the nay sayers chip in, this excludes the likes of XR8's SS etc.

Pretty much since the 1990s just about everything on the road will pull 180kmh, its no real surprise.
I think 300 is the new 200 when it comes to fast cars. |
