I just saw the documentary above and it is a real eye opener.
Basically it discusses the situation which is called 'Peak Oil Production'. ie: the point in time when the maximum oil produciton occurs after which it starts to reduce because of dwindling oil reserves. The theory is it will happen in the next couple of decades. With the emerging economies in China, India, etc, the demand for energy is skyrocketing and will continue to grow almost exponentially in the future. There will be a time when the energy needs of the world will no longer be able to be filled (oil is consumed at about 50 billion barrels per day !!!). Alternate energies such as wind, nuclear etc will not be able to supply anywhere near the cheap energy that oil and fossil fuels do. If the 'peak' comes in the next 20 years mankind is in for a real shock and the way in which we are accustomed to living will change VERY, VERY DRAMATICALLY !! If you get the opportunity to check the doco out do it. It's at some theatres but should also be on the web somewhere I imagine. Here's the review from the 'Age'. http://www.theage.com.au/news/film-r...414448790.html |

If it does reach its peak won't that mean there is still enough to last another 100+ years. I know that they won't have enough to reach demand and all the chaos that goes with it, but after hearing all the crap about all the oil running dry within a few decades isn't this just a load of crap then if it still hasn't even reached its peak. All the doomsayers keep saying there will be no oil in 20 years and everything will go Mad Max style.
Just a thought, don't shoot me down. Probably seems like a dumb thing to say but its worth discussing. |

For a 100 years only a small number of the worlds country's were big users of oil. Now the world population is 5 times of what it was at the turn of last century and EVERYONE is using Oil now. If you understand "bell curves" then the last hundred years did not see a constant usage it was increasing from year to year. The usage now is 1000's of times larger than it was say 60 years ago I imagine. So there is some logic to the theory especially since half of the world population is only NOW becoming industrialised and using oil and it's products in large amounts. China has about a fifth of the worlds population and it's economy is growing at 10%. Until the 1990's the main mode of transport was the push bike from what i hear. Oil is a finite resource and we depend so much on it - it'll run out sometime. I'm not sure what the future has in store but I think we've seen the best times...... Just my thoughts too. |

And in the 1980s when they released the 4 cylinder Commodore oil was going to run out in 10 years too........
Except back then there was only the seven o'clock news to make people afraid, now we have the internet where anyone with a barrow to push can create a name for themselves buy peddling fear uncertainty and doubt. Regards, Tote

Let me guess, It's all China's fault. Or should that be American and Australian fuelled investment in China's fault?
Nother like the media to put the fear of driving a 4 cylinder Commodore into you, hey. |

You can't go listening to the media too much as they will never give you the full truth, remember by last Christmas we were meant to be paying $2 a litre that was being flashed all over the news, What a shock it never happened.
Point is there is still a bit of Oil out there, the thing is these reserves are hard to tap and also expensive to extract when compared to current wells, sheal oil reserves is one such example, presently it’s not cost effective to extract it but as price raises it will be. How long it will last who knows, it's all guessing by the "Experts" but I wouldn't go hitting the panic button just yet. Last edited by Green X; 17-06-2007 at 09:51 PM. |

In the end though it's going to run out. Maybe not 10 years, maybe not 20 but it will. The ramifications are huge. 98 % of transport relies on oil (air, land, sea). Like I said above the doco includes a lot of interesting details and facts. |
