Well I know in Aus the XR8 badge was used on the high performance Falcons but here in South Africa we only ever got one XR8 and it was an XR8 that the rest of the world couldnt buy....the Sierra XR8, only 255 were ever made to homologate the the car for racing.
It took the 5 door Sierra bodyshell, used the XR4 rear wing, diff was an upgraded uint from the Granda, wheels and brake components were both custom made. Cars nose was also custom, lenghened to accomodate the 302 that was fitted, the water pump was an Essex V6 item, not to bright as XR8's soon got rep for overheating, despite that fact that 2 giant electric fans were fitted. The motor was mated to a Mustang T5 gearbox and the motor was aso fitted with an oil cooler. Power was 161 kW but torque was 374Nm which in a fairly light bodyshell made for 0-100 in 7 sec and 230 km/h top speed. Today these cars have become series collectors pieces, funnily enough one of the few SA fords that havent found there way to Aus...yet! |

Sorry but I cant help but see what I think is a marroon Morris 1100 with a wing on the boot beside the Opel. There definatley seems to be a power to low weight ratio trend in SA cars being homolagated for racing back in the seventies.
