When I checked a car we bought a few years ago, the online one was free for a basic check, ie:to see if there were any drama's in the cars history.

If there was anything there then I would've had to pay for the detailed report.

i had a quick look at the Vicroads website and the first one i found was $23.90 for the check.
maybe there is a free one there?
i asked at the counter on a previous car we bought and all they would tell me was when it was last regod, nothing more.

Ok, try these...https://www.autocheck.com.au/

and http://www.revs.nsw.gov.au/

I know the last one is NSW but I used it a few years ago to check a Vic car before I bought it.

Last I used REVS they only charge if you want them to send you a printed report.

That is, the check is free. You will see the results on screen, but it offers you no protection.

If you want to be protected by the report, you need to buy a hard copy. Its unlikely, but possible REVS could miss some encumbrance, but by purchasing the report, youre protected even if a bank claims ownership.

So to protect yourself, buy one. If you trust the result on screen and dont feel the need for actual protection just in case, then dont worry and just use the online report.

As per Gas O Lanes post, http://www.revs.nsw.gov.au/

You can ring vic roads and get a free one over the phone but it gives you no protection should it latter turn out to be stolen or have money out on it. You need to purchase the certificate as mentioned to give you 100% protection. You also need to purchase it the day you are actually taking ownership of the car and they will just send it out to you in the mail

just to clarify:
its a Toyota Celica, the FRAME number IS the VIN/Chassis number?

might pay to pay for the report i think:

THERE ARE FINANCIAL INTERESTS RECORDED AGAINST THE SUPPLIED VEHICLE
IDENTIFIERS
** STATE HAS NO RTA ACCESS **
RTA check is not available for the state entered.

ill ask him about it and see what he says.

If he says its now paid out, get a report/letter stating same from said financial institution.

It might pay to do a state specific search to identify the actual institution so you can independently check it out.

Id say frame and Chassis no are the same thing.

Talk to the seller to find out what you can, but whatever you do, dont take anything he says at face value.

If youre still interested Id pay for the Victorian check via Vic RTA or whoever does it so you know yourself what institution its through, dont take the sellers word for it.

And make sure the financial interests are no longer attached to the car, again, make sure yourself via the institution, dont take a sellers word for it, and make them give you that in writing, or by removing the interest and recheck via REVS or whoever.

Be aware of scams like, you pay him the money for the car and he'll pay it to the bank so it wont be a problem. Umm, yeah it will. If thats the case, you make payment directly to the bank, but only once you get something from the bank saying they release any interest by that payment.

Oh yeah, and not something he hands you saying its from the bank. The only way to be sure its from the bank, is for you to talk to the bank. For privacy reasons he might need to be there with you.

Is it worth it still? As you said, its still your hard earned, and Id feel that way about $1, its the principle of giving to someone dishonest. Id rather hand it to someone begging in the street, at least its honest.

By the time you pay for the check, go through the hassle of personally verifying the finance is paid out, you cant take his word for it, or just accept some letter he shows you, I could print anything and make it look official.

What year Sillycar is it?

im not going to be verifying anything.
once finance is paid out, the financier has to remove the interest.
if it comes back with a financial interest, im not going to bother.
he did say that it was in his mums name as he thought insurance would be cheaper and it was his first car he got when he was 18 but that still doesnt mean anything.
its an 85/86 SX with a 5 speed manual.
only getting it for a cheap work hack really.

Fair enough, just dont touch it til the check comes back clean.

The reason I made the other points was there was a thread here just a few days ago where some poor bugger handed cash over, and had the car repo'd from his house or similar. That and a girl I used to know did the same thing with a VC SLE about ??12-15?? yrs ago, she reckons she went through the checks etc which she actually did, but turns out on a couple of things after that she took the sellers word for it. I think she ended up paying another $2500 for the car to the finance company.

ill give him the chance to explain it and ill see what the check says.
i dont mind paying the $23, the car IS worth it if it is legit, if it isnt, $23 isnt the end of the world either.
