Default Poll - Ford Marketing Good or Bad?

Forum users have been debating the marketing techniques of both Holden & Ford.

Some feel Ford marketing is out of touch and not connecting with the people.

Well have your say... let the figures speak for themselves

Occasionally, very good.

Usually OK but way to little. Did FoMoCo just launch a new Falcon? Did I miss it. I'm sure it was at the motorshow.

Sometime hopeless. I still remember the LTD add which ran for months in the Fin Review. "Ford LTD, only its name is limited" FFS LTD stands (stood) for Lincoln Type Design. If they don't know there products are called......

It stems back to Jack the Knife and his statement about "too many car people at Ford". Holding my breath waiting for Steve Jobs to follow with too many techo's at Apple. Feeling dizzy now.....

Im largely immune to to most forms of marketing... i prefer to judge products on their own merits, and make a purchase decision based on that, not because of being wooed by "feel good" or "hero" marketing techniques...
Model and Brand awareness is very important, but the "feel good" fluff isn't necessary IMO...

i never see ford ads on tv but i seem to bombarded with the new holden ute every 5 mins, the last one i remember is the fairmont ghia ad with the euro flags in the fields and that.

fpv ads are a joke last one i saw was the one with the nuclear bomb footage then it disappeared

They need the $$$ and support from the executives before they can run a campaign like Toyota's market saturation campaigns.

The last good advertisement was the ute one featuring the metrosexuals getting booked, the beer (Mr Frothy), BFT TV being loaded and the line-up of hardware stores.

Nothing inspiring since. Ford marketing could be described as 'subliminal' - in that it is below conscious awareness that the product is out there, but enough to evoke a response in saying it is inconsistent and lacklustre.

Marketing and advertising are different things.

Marketing studies the market, ie: customer base, who to target as in 18-30 yo urban males as opposed to say 18-30 yo rural males, or 25-40 yo, let alone women, the aged, enthusiasts, fleets, and it goes on and can include things like race, education, professionals or tradies or labourers etc, the list is endless almost. And they study what the identified market segment(s) want. They also try to influence the potential market segment with innovation and attract new segments through the same and advertising and information releases or motor shows etc. They gather information that enables understanding and awareness of the preferences and tastes of the particular market segments. This can be via polls or questionnaires at motor shows, on the streets. They gather the data that buyers are sent after a year or so that asks their views on the car they have purchased and its servicing etc.

Advertisers make a campaign that reaches the identified market segments that marketing have identified. They identify the habits of the target group(s) and pitch ads in likely high profile places for that group in a manner that appeals to them. For example, theres no point running ads that focus on the safety features during Mrs Marple for the new FG if the target market is the 18-30 yo group. Advetisers utilise the data gathered by marketers.

Ford has no idea in either department IMO. The current SR ad is just the same old car ad technique. Cars run on a platform, ads should not, although Holden can make that work for them.

instead of poor, you should have put pooh
lol

they have bought out 1 good add a year IMO.

the best of late was the BA turbo, with "cant get enough of this" blaring out, that instilled passion, and about every guy i saw was doing the wavey thing in front of their side mirror as they drove around. Equally tied to the turbo terri eating performance cars for breaky.

and the XR8 ute guys were good for the 'stuck in 3rd' ad and the one with all the cops behind them, after that they were beating a dead horse.

Pretty poor if you ask me... i can just see it; the marketers are blaming the accountants for not giving them enough $$$ in their budget and accountants are blaming the marketers for their complete lack of creativity with the money available....

its an absolute joke..

In the MMS liftout they run the same same double page add twice. Surely they could have done something different.

When they do run an add, they spend too much time f*(king around trying to be artistic etc., eg. the Mondeo advert and the focus. IMHO, just show us some good all round shots of the car, decent tune and how much it is.

It annoys me because they don't tell you ANYTHING!!!

Every man and their dog knows that Toyotas has "VVT" but when I try to explain that pretty much every car has variable cam timing these days they go "but Toyotas has VVT"

Has anybody seen the Toyota Yaris ad with "all of Toyotas big ideas in one small package" and they have all the features flying into the little car.

One of the big ideas was SEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou Toyota for changing the automotive landscape with your innovation of car seats.

Fords have pretty advanced features. Why not showcase this??? Toyota make a fortune flogging their average cars as state of the art.

NOTHING will ever come close to the 60's ad for the Escort.
Dancing girls, Disco lights, Twenty different tripped-out spiral & optical illusion type effects, Music associated with acid trips, and in the whole ad, you see the car.. maybe 3 times? if that? and not even close-ups, its kind of just tucked away at the far end of the set.
Strange, but it worked.

OR perhaps they should try a 'napi-san challenge' approach to their ads. just randomly pick people for test drives and record the 'Fwooaahh!!' reactions.

I saw plenty of Ford marketing last night on channel 7 and channel 9 - except it was all for the Mondeo and the Focus - so I'm guessing the majority of FFAU would tune out for those?

I dont get pulled in by a feel good marketing campaign but buy for the product whether it be car, house, wine, or stakeknives etc

I do however wonder what Ford do sometimes. I am not talking taking a photo on this angle vs that angle but more about lack of promoting their advantages over their rivals. No point dwelling on history so IMO the next few things Ford need to Focus on.

Falcons updated mechanicals, safety etc 5 Auto Std etc.

Falcon uses less fuel than Commodore (word it to full effect), while maintaining better performance

XR6Turbo uses 2.5litres less fuel per 100km based on independent testing by ... (whoever does that little sticker on the windscreen that says XR6T uses 11.7 and SS 14. something....Something along the lines of who says performance needs to come at a cost blah blah. Performance car or not it cant be underestimated how that can tip a 50-50 buyer.

Diesel Territory and Falcon marketing go without saying when the product finally arrives...Long overdue..I know a couple of people just wanting to buy a Diesel Terry now.

A ute marketing campaign again like a few years ago when Falcon ute sales were doubling Commodore ones

Like this poll isn't going to turn out 90% "Ford marketing is in the pits" because all the marketing geniuses here will have their say

Post for Post this is the direction the thread is going in

"Fords marketing is terrible"

Followed by "Holden is so much better at marketing"

Then "Its the dealers fault"

Finally "We need a halo car"

I somehow don't think Ford marketing is all that bad (with the exception of the Falcon, but we can all agree its sales are down at the moment for many reasons) Many of the other Ford products are on the up and up.

The new Falcon campaign will be a telling time for its marketing department.
