Slow news day, too many technical issues for it to work outside metro areas on new vehicles, let alone old ones.
Lets analyse the beat up. THE State Government is investigating speed-limiting devices for passenger vehicles to curb leadfoot drivers. They've given an academic in the department something to keep him busy. All state governments, local transport and road authorities, and New Zealand have been collaborating for 12 months on technology that can automatically slow speeding cars. He's got an email account too. Supporters suggest the technology could reduce the need for high-level policing on roads, make speed cameras irrelevant and curtail P-plate hoons. We can save some more money on those expensive performance cars that we have to keep buying, maybe we can cut a few HP officers too. Next month the Roads and Traffic Authority will host a forum for car industry heavyweights, including representatives from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, about the initiative. If you send enough emails a catered jolly will appear "We think these devices should provide feedback or assist drivers, not control their actions," he said. "This feedback could be in the form of an alarm, voice command or resistance on the accelerator pedal, making it harder for the driver to accelerate above the speed limit. But we strongly believe that drivers must maintain control and responsibility of the car." The legalities of a car being unable to accelerate out of trouble are too hard, lets not get carried away, enjoy the catered lunch though. Regards, Tote

But it might happen in the future, you just never know. I hope it never does. I remember hearing a story about a guy who had a brainiac idea to fit a spring or some other speed measuring device under his accelerator pedal to prevent him "speeding". Anyway story goes - He was attempting to over take a truck on a freeway but was making slow progress and got cleaned up in a head-on. Instant fatality.

pfft, Government cost cutting is all it will be, not a life saver. They say that speeding is the greatest cause of accidents, i rather tend to think that incapable, unsafe driving is the biggest killer.

It's really sad that no-one is putting any great effort into the real reasons of deaths on our road.
Even still, more people die from drug overdoses or heart attacks, yet all we hear about every day in the media or from GovCo is "speeding is so bad", etc etc. Democracy is eroding, ever-so quickly.

Truck drivers can get around them, so why wont we be able to aswell??
Speed limiters are dangerous, any decent truck driver will tell you that.

mitchg, that remark is asking for a argument. I'm a p plater and drive a 05 ba xr8 mate and i drive to the speed limit as my job is on the line if i dont. And ill be first to tell you that 1 out of 5 cars that is speeding 10ks or over is a p plater.

I dout very much it will ever happen, the comment was based more on how people view p platers these days & P platers would possabily be the first to wear this device cause of their reputations, & with the current restrictions. |

there will be a day that when you drive past a speed limit sign, your car will automatically be reduced to that speed as a maximum.
40kmh in a 40 zone, 60kmh in a 60 zone - you get the idea. this will be inbuilt into your car and will be massive fines for disabling/tampering with the device. |

If it does happen, it will be either, 1) limited to a certain part of the community (i.e, P-platers, serial offenders) 2) or a long, long way into the future. |

eh? isnt this the car makers responsibility? I know Audi, Volvo, Lexus and many others already come up with all sorts of safety ideas and develop prototypes of them all the time. So why would a state government blow money on just skimming the surface of something I bet both my balls will never turn into anything worth mentioning again. give me my money back.

Did you know that more people die from suicide per year in Aus than on the roads? And of that road toll less than 50% is due to speeding. And of those classified as "speeding" more than half had alcohol in their system?
Yep the governmnets a clever bunch...

Maybe they should put speed limiters on Aaron Davey too...
Complete rubbish. We might as well make all knives with paper to stop people stabbing others. There is something called, "responsibility", meaning that onus lies on the user of a particular item, whether it be a car, a tool, or anything else you can think of. Unfortunately, a few idiots spoil it for everybody else, and as a result, we're all branded idiots.

I doubt this 'initiave' will ever see light...We use cars, cars don't use us. It doesn't matter if you are doing the speed limit or speeding, you can still die or have an accident, the only variable is the likeliness of an accident. Compulsary advanced driving training with every new license issued is the key. Teach the drivers to be smart, not teach the cars to be smart.

They certainly know how to complicate things, after all they have had speed limiters on trucks since 1989. Can all be done through the computer, and bring fines in big enough that will deter anyone from fiddling with them. As they should now.
