go to google and look up australian poker league

and find which of your locals (pubs/rsl's/whatevers) hold APL events. they are free entry, but have real prize money at the end. its good fun. a bit of a social thing i have going with my mates.

Plenty of poker sites with free chips but depending on your aim (if you want to learn how to play good poker, vs just playing for fun) it may not be the best thing for you.

I tried fulltilt, pokerstars and a couple of others and the free tables are hideous. Usually comprised of people who will go all in before the flop every hand regardless of what they're holding. So you're rarely actually playing poker on these tables. If that's not a concern to you, it's just a case of downloading a client and you can join and number of tables using play chips. Free at no obligation.

If your aim is to get better at the game, as soon as you start putting real money on entering tournaments, people calm down. I was playing $1 tables for the hell of it and you can actually get some decent poker players on there and the first few hands being all-in before the flop doesn't happen anywhere near as often. So on these tables you can actually get better at the game and learn to develop your playing style.

Instead of playing online, you should plan to have a poker night with mates.

Once in a while, my friends and I get together for a game. Free games do not work because people put stupid bets on, as is the case on Facebook.

Buy in at 5-10 bucks is ideal. We play 5. It's there to keep people honest.
We don't go any higher because the idea of the night is to have fun with friends - the money is inconsequential.
A game lasts us several hours because during this time we share drinks, eat snacks, and order a couple of pizzas.

The night might cost you a few dollars, but it's good stuff.

In direct contrast, I went to "The Saint Hotel" or someplace like that on Saturday night for a friend's do. Holy Crap...boring! Drinks were terrible (they don't know what a Scotch and Dry is - I think he gave me scotch and lime - he couldn't hear me!) and expensive, music was crap and ridiculously loud (couldn't hear anybody), and the place was packed.

So Poker is a cost effective night out IMO.

My friends do something similar but unfortunately they want to play $50 a throw with blinds that double every 5 minutes. Not a fan, you're not actually playing poker anymore. Even though I'm probably a few hundred up I just don't get any enjoyment out of it.

I'd much prefer a relaxing 5-10 a game, slower blinds and pizza.

Bicycle Texas Hold'em is what I used to play (way too much) and it can be found on MSN games. Heaps better than the other ones because instead of fake chips there is a whole ratings system, giving you a good match.
