Why is the Australian Government pushing so hard and fast with changes/penalties for Aussie motorists, when it's well known and documented that we contribute less than one percent of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions? Of that, again smaller percentage created by motor vehicles.

Because I highly doubt the NRMA lines the pockets of the government/political parties quite as well as BHP and Rio

Because they're Politicians and they have to finance the "critically important and pressing matter" of the portion size of subsidised "Beef Strogonoth" meals in the Parliament House Canteen some how!

Carbon emissions is the in thing. I'm doing my bit for the environment today though, 6 pack is chilling and some nice thick steaks are gradually reaching room temperature.

simple. cars and drivers are easy targets. it is fashionable to be environmentally conscious right now, and nobody likes to be seen to be doing the fashionable thing than our beloved prime minister. cars are also a very visible symbol of pollution. they are on every street in every town and city. the large polluters are remote and rarely seen by your average moron. it is a case of out of sight, out of mind.
besides, drivers have a great history of not standing up for ourselves. we let all sorts of special interest groups walk all over us and take it lying down. allowing the federal government to do the same thing comes as no surprise.

This is the reason why I bought the XR8, If i'm going to be penalised then I may as well drive something worthwhile. So I sold my 1.3l Barina/Swift.

because governments must be seen to be doing something and the whole farce that is global warming has literally created a trillion dollar industry. Just think, trading carbon credits for those who are cashed up enough to do it. Fat chunks of lard like Gore can make billions in one day.
Also, being seen to do something is not that measurable yet the dummies in the electorate are convinced that the government is working. It is nothing but a new tax which is anti progressive and will cost thousands of jobs; hopefully by the time the govt is out of office anyway. We are being conned by a wax miner.

THis is why I didn't vote Labor last election...
Mr Rudd is a very good salesperson, but whose policies are still a blur to me. It was great hearing about "working families" in his pre-election speeches, but it's all been pish-posh, with lovely gestures and symbolic changes that won't really do a hell of a lot... Given that only a portion of our 1% global contribution to greenhouse gases comes from automotive, I think it's an absolute insult that we cannot spend our money on the vehicle we want. People who buy larger cars pay more in petrol costs...penalty enough. We live in a democracy, in almost absolute freedom, yet we're told we're killing the planet by driving a vehicle we like. Some people drive large vehicles for work...why should they be punished? You can't work as a tradesman in a bloody Barina. If Mr Rudd wants to lessen greenhouse gases, he should talk less...

Why cause they can they will push anything. that they can and remain in a positive position .(seems like they care)
1 .speed camers - there saving lives so they reckon 2. smokes -smoking is bad for you tax it so hard you wont smoke 3. Drinking - same again 4. polution - is another one they can capitalise on 5. Fast food - Will be the next target Im probly forgetting somthing but all these things they will push and continue to increase taxes/fines because they allways will have a defence for it . What can you do personally i think these things need to be taxed but not to the extremes they are . |

Me doing 2 or 3000 k a year in my 5.8L V8 or the person doing 20,000 k a year in their 1.5L 4 cyl. Pollies are such simple minded morons arent they. We wont even mention that the realy big polluters are exempt from this tax and the ordinary australian has to foot the bill for them. The way I see it people have been paying to pollute for years why will this stop anyone. I allso fail to see how the money collected will fix the problem, you cant just buy back the forrests, you cant just unburn all the coal and oil.

Australia only makes something like 2% of the worlds Co2 emissions, and cars are only something like 8% of that, so its 2 fifths of fek all. Maybe the government can start taxing cows and sheep, considering they produce something like a quarter of all Co2 emissions in Oz.
Global warming is nothing but an un proven myth based on assumptions of idiots, who only listen to the crap feed to them by people who are in it for their own financial gains. Al Gore must be laughing all the way to the bank. |

Well that's it...
We're so short-sighted as a species... It's a fact that the Pious is not as environmentally friendly as advertised, but that doesn't matter for now. There will be a breaking point where enough will be enough...and I've already reached it. If we want to eliminate greenhouse gases completely, we should purge ourselves of all technology and mechanics, and return to being neanderthals, wearing bearskins as clothes and hunting with clubs and stones. I think the government is barking up the wrong tree on this one...

If you look at it realistically, the only answer succesive governments have had to any problem is to tax it higher.
Smokes.............if you tried to introduce cigarettes to the market now you'd never get them approved for sale. All research is that they aren't good for you. They should be banned for sale but we just tax them higher and spend money on Quit campains. Binge drinking............tax alcopops. Not enough water..........put up the price but don't do anything to improve things. Speed cameras............you could limit power output and speed capabilities but its more profitable to have speed cameras. Etc etc etc.......... |

This thread reads like the minutes of a meeting of the flat earth society.
If anybody is a climate change sceptic (I was) or doesnt understand the problem and why we need to do something, I highly recommend reading a book by Tim Flannery, "The Weather Makers". Everybody can and should reduce the damage they are doing to the planet. Australia may not be the worlds biggest polluter, but that doesnt mean we should sit here throwing coal on the barbie until China cleans up its act and someone teaches all the cows to stop farting, or whatever your favourite excuse for doing nothing is ! |

So far I used four full tanks of fuel in 2008. Manufacturing any new car creates at least 5 tonnes of CO2 to be produced. See, you can be a treehugger and save the environment by driving an old V8 ! : Last edited by ZC001; 21-09-2008 at 01:52 PM. Reason: typo |

Why would you even buy a Prius if you were trying to safe the environment? The area where they get the nickel for the batteries in the Prius is now an environmental dead zone which cannot sustain life, so now NASA uses it to test its moon robots in.
Saving the environment my ***.
