GM seem like they're still gonna spend money on it.....I wonder if things cahnge come June 1.

I wonder if this news is actually old (even though dated as today)

It's old news. They said a couple of months ago they would be continuing with the platform and doing refinements here and there.
Realistically, it would be pretty naiive to assume that GM would forgo it's $1Bn investment in the car before they have recouped it.. |

It's interesting their specific mention of "exotic" panel materials, Jaguar and FoA.
Jaguar has been VERY good at losing weight on the XJ's with aluminium bodywork and chassis- the 6 cyls weigh about as much as an EL (~1550kg). I think it would be very good to see both Holden and FoA go down that path, seeing as "Now, the costs of doing these sort of things have come down to the point where we can actually do them, and make money out of it, we can get mass out of the car very easily" |

The next major step in Ford's plan for improved fuel economy is significant weight savings. (15%-20%). This was scheduled for 2013-2015 I believe, once EcoBoost was up and running.
Expect Ford Aus to adopt same measures. Quote:

Well I would imagine that once FoA made the switch to engines that were all alloy (including the V6, the I6 is going to go sooner or later) that will save a fair amount of weight. In fact, it starts next year when the Coyote turns up. Albeit for the V8's only.
