Exclamation VW Golf Wheels Car of The Year

HE Volkswagen Golf has claimed Australia's longest running motoring award, the Wheels magazine's car of the year.

The VW Golf eclipsed 56 other cars derived from 22 models representing 16 manufacturers to win the coveted gong.

Wheels editor Ged Bulmer said the Golf model range boasted exceptional performance, safety features and advancements within a price range of $25,990 to $42,990.

"The turbo-charged, five-door hatch VW Golf range is outstanding,'' Mr Bulmer said today.

"The Golf oozes sophistication, refinement and development in an energetic package that comes with fundamentally good steering and balance.''

Some 57 variants of 22 shortlisted models were subjected to week-long judging for the award, which was established in 1963.

No Australian-built cars were eligible for the 2009 award, with 10 of the 22 finalists made in Japan.

That field was trimmed to a final four - the Golf, Toyota Prius, Skoda Superb and Mercedes Benz E class sedan.
