Default Drunk, unlicensed teenage girl crashed car trying to impress her friends and family.

Quote:
A DRUNK and unlicensed teenage girl who slammed a car full of family and friends into a pole in country Victoria early was trying to impress them, police claim.
Wayne Flower, Matt Johnston From: Herald Sun January 20, 2010 12:00AM

The Colac girl said she felt sad when reading about the Mill Park tragedy that claimed five young lives last Sunday, but did not believe the same thing could happen to her.

The lucky escape came as Premier John Brumby said the Government was considering crushing hoons' cars.

The 17-year-old had allegedly drunk "goon" - cheap cask wine - when she used a knife to start her mum's car and go driving in the early hours of the morning.

She was allegedly "drifting" around a bend when she lost control and the car slammed into a pole, injuring her younger brother.

The pair and two other youths - including a 12-year-old - fled the scene but were later caught by police.

The girl, who is expected to be charged on summons with several offences, said the crash left her shaken and scared and had taught her an important lesson.

She said she regretted her behaviour and warned other youths against trying something similar.

"It's stupid and idiotic and don't try to do it. Don't try to do what I did. It gets you in a lot of trouble and very hurt," she said.

"I'll never climb behind the wheel of a car again ... I feel I'm lucky to be alive and (so is) everyone else around me."

She said her brother thought the experience was fun, despite being taken to hospital with an injured wrist.

"He said something really stupid. He said it was fun. I didn't think so," she said.

Mr Brumby conceded more work was needed to reduce the road toll.

"We have got this terrible, terrible problem with young drivers ... who think they are indestructible, who think they are invincible, and we have seen some awful, awful tragedies," he said.

All options were on the table in the battle against deadly driving behaviour. "I'm getting some work done on this now. Speed limiting devices, whether we have to toughen up hoon legislation, confiscating, selling or crushing hoon vehicles if there's a second occurrence - these are things we have got to look at," he said.

The mother of the girl who crashed in Colac was drinking at a friend's house when her daughter took her car.

She said her daughter had shown little remorse.

"She's 17 and she's at that age where she wants to party and rage," she said.

"They all walked off with no remorse. They just don't care ... she and my son are lucky to be alive. You can't take your eyes off your kids."

The woman said she would have to catch a bus in future because the car was uninsured.

Being a teenager myself, I know people and have been around people who do these sorts of things and in my opinion it all comes down to driver responsibility.

You can run all these ads and speed kills campaigns as much as you want, but if the person behind the wheel doesn't want to hear it then what hope do they have?

What's it going to take for people to wake up? Such a shame.

Maybe these "hoons" should do community service as well, in an emergency room, assisting doctors and nurses to treat car crash victims.

Introduce "mandantory crushing of hoons cars" I say, and bring it on sooner or later. It may help to a small degree, but any amount is a reduction to the road toll.

I see crushing as nothing but a wasteful way to make a statement.
A better option would be to sell them and put the funds back into roads projects.

How does crushing a car do anything when these people that are crashing not only don't have pride for their car, they are stupid enough to take mates joyriding at stupid speeds, drunk, with suspended licences... Tougher laws and restrictions can't do anything to people who could give a rats...

Mum usually probably drives home after the all night session, daughter thought she would try it too!

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, which is why they should be taught at a young age and correctly

I am looking forward (after 19-20 years) where the kids can finally pick me up and take me home after having a few too many, so I don't have to rely on cabs or mates to get me home!! but they have always been taught ..if Dad's pi$$ed, he's getting a cab, you don't have to hot wire a car to show me what a w$#@er I have been to you!!

Teacher friend was telling me the other day that they're not allowed to use red pen anymore to correct work because it might have a negative effect on their confidence. WTF???!!!

No form of corporal punishment will ever come in...
The courts saw to that.
As a result, personal responsibility has completely disappeared from society. As a result, responsibility, self-accountability and sensibility have all but disappeared.

S11 was a good start. You had idealistic fools throwing urine and faeces at police. A few police raised their batons (nothing more) and were charged, while the people attacking police and throwing things while in a place they were not meant to be got off scott free.

What message does that send to people? Act like a complete ************ and get away with it.

I think I might go burn down the children's hospital now. I'll get off because I'll use some BS excuse about being mentally scarred frmo my parents smacking, my teachers calling me an idiot and that episode of 'The Contest' on Seinfeld which disturbed me greatly...yep. Who else has deep pockets that I can sue? Oh yeah...I'll chuck Microsoft in there for good measure.

Now come on, I think "said the crash left her shaken and scared and had taught her an important lesson." this is a good thing. The sooner you learn you arent invincible the better. Pretty poor behaviour on her part but I reckon she wont do it again.

Was thinking about this the other day, perhaps making it compulsory to hold a riders license prior to driving a car?

They'll soon learn their place on the road, and become very aware and conscious of their decisions...

I.E. 17 you don't get a car license, you get a riders license for 250cc... ride for 3 years then upgrade to car. removes all passenger issues and having no protection will very quickly teach them they're not invincible.

Arguably harch, no matter what happens you won't stop the behaviour, period. However removing passengers and feeling of protection from being in a car will go a long way to minimising the casualties, biker only takes out bike & himself, not others...

Cheers

why would crushing the mothers car work????
How about the lambo owner where the mechanic got hit for hooning - is it really justifiable to destroy $600,000 just to teach him a lesson? Or how about the journalist busted for 230km/h in the ferrari he was testing? How can crushing someone elses vehicle teach anyone anything????

And again it happens. But there's no talk of a solution to the problem. Only punishments and discipline. Well what about those that die before they get a chance to be punished? What if their punishment is a best friend dead, a record for the rest of their lives and a disfigured body?

Our government and the RTA needs to work on driver education and training. That is the main cause of these problems. The uneducated(which is EVERYONE, even i'm still uneducated to a degree when it comes to controlling a car in unnatural(spins etc) conditions) are being handed the keys to cars they can barely control. Sure they've got 50km roads, turn signals, round abouts and reverse parking down pat to get their license but thats as far as their knowledge goes. They(We, yes us too) don't learn to control a vehicle at that stage. We're just along for the ride and we're supposed to learn this control on these craptastic roads of Australia where half the country can't bloody drive either?

And its not just car control. It's also got to do about them having the knowledge of where the cars limits are, what can actually happen, the shock and shunting it will give you when you hit something at 50km/hr or more. The sound and the sudden stop. Atleast people will have more pro's to add into the basket of don't drive like a moron instead of "Nah, it wouldn't happen to me".
These are all factors that Australians should have access to. We are a modern country with the technology to teach these things and instead the government goes "Spend money? Are you nuts! That's not the right way to do it! Cure is much better then prevention - It lets us pay for all our trips overseas to save the planet from Climate Change which is definately going to destroy the planet in the next 5 years!"
Off tangent yes but my point is made.

Because as a Parent and custodian and as an adult she's responsible for her kids actions.....
That said selling the vehicle would be a smarter thing rather than crushing and killing its asset value..

Davo_xr, that line "the crash had left her shaken and scared and had taught her an important lesson" sounds a little too rehearsed to me. In fact it actually sounds like something a solicitor told her to say.

Chances are she will do it again; drinking "GOON" will most likely see her have another ommission of consciousness and do something stupid only to be "shaken and scared and had taught her an important lesson" again.

Strap the **********!

How’s that going to work?

Do you want to start a war? Think about it for a second. A young bloke who loves his car gets it crushed, bad luck for him, you say. Then this person uses the next $500 dollars that falls into his lap to buy a firearm and take out his “rage” on the next copper he sees driving around.

Also, if someone is diving in a manner that some in authority deem to be hooning, what’s the bet that when they see a flashing light in their mirror they say ‘stuff it’, I’m not going to stop and I’ll do whatever it takes to get away from them and then see what happens?

Oh, I almost forgot. When the local copper in your area takes a dislike to you and claims that he heard a screech from your tyres when you took off from a set of lights, you get your car impounded under the ‘Hoon law’ and you have no way of proving otherwise. This copper has it in for you and it happens a couple more times and before you know it, your car is going to the crusher.

Would you still agree with crushing cars then?

There are coppers who use this ‘law’ to suite themselves.

I'd say that at a minimum for this to work there would have to be video evidence of the car being driven in a hoon like fashion before a court would rule that the vehicle must be crushed.

This is part of the problem. Who decides what a ‘hoon fashion’ is?
The legislation doesn’t differentiate between hoon type offences.
