Can anyone tell me is there a place where you go to
where they will connect your car computer to the laptop and they will run in the new engine for you for a few hundred bucks? Thanks |

You really can't do that. If you want it to be run in properly you need to put it in varying situations that connot be simulated.
Just go for a big drive over a weekend, a couple of thousand kilometres will do wonders. |

If you're running in a new engine, make sure it fits well on your waist and tighten your belt if necessary...
Ok seriously, do as flappist said, a nice long drive to get everything working smoothly is the best, loosen it up a bit, the only way to go really.

yes, do not use cruise or keep the same speed for too long. go through the gears, give it a mix of light and hard acceleration, don't let it cruise along at the same speed.

When my engine was rebuilt the engine builder ran it in on the bench so to speak, he wanted to do this to run in the camshaft mainly so he told me, should have asked him why back then but didnt want to sound a novice, he wouldnt be half wrong lol. I think its something to do with heat generated in the bearings or the lobes of a new shaft. Can anyone correct me on this, its got me curious?

If u can run in the engine on engine dyno that the best way in my oppinion as the opperator can run through different temps and loads.

A free spinning engine under no load will not be run in properly at all. If you want to take your engine to an engine dyno and devise a big variable industrial generator to the rear to simulate load then maybe. But a free spinning engine in neutral? I see glazing in the cylinders. Take it for a nice drive, WOT a few times (not to redline), labour it up hills, run through the gears; vary its load and remember the car and weight its attached to are helping it to run in properly. The piston rings will bed in nicely which will prevent excessive blow by that kills poorly run in engines. Drive it like this for 1500klm and it will be a good motor.

Just drive it.
It only takes a few minutes for the rings to bed (or not) and you'll know if it starts to burn oil that they didn't. The rest of running in is letting the sliding/rubbing surfaces bed in to each other and takes time. When new these surfaces will generate extra heat as well as more metallic contaminates in the oil. Overheating of parts is the biggest danger and can cause ultimate failure. Change the oil and keep to a few short(ish) drives and let the car cool down regularly and you'll have a long lasting vehicle. |

Might as well have my say. Some good info here, some bad IMHO.
Do not labour the motor at any stage. Do LOAD the motor. After camshaft break in (to wear the lifters to each lobe individually, pushrod engines) drop oil & filter and refill with whatever you are going to use (non synthetic) with another bottle of cam break in additive. Drive the car loading it up (heavy throttle, not to redline) and then back off sharply. The load pushes the rings into the bore thus seating (wearing) them. The back off causes vacuum that sucks oil up past the unseated rings ready for the next load up. Do this a few times and they will be seated. Then drive car varying load and speed for 500 or so kays. Drop oil & filter. Drive it like you stole it. Moly faced rings don't take too much to seat and bearings shouldn't be wearing anyway. JMHO |
