Powershift problems

On a side note, I drove a manual diesel last week. I really wish Ford gave us the choice of a manual for the diesel engine.

spot on apstar . . . you'd have to be mad to own a manual in Sydney. Think a clutch press every 20 seconds for two hours each day. Stop, start, Stop, Start . . . I did it in a 1997 manual Mondeo for three years and my left leg would be shaking some days when I got home.

interesting that no-one wants manual at first.
SWMBO was unimpressed that the XR5 was only available in manual, then she drove it for a while.
Then we bought her a mini, and guess what, she chose a JCW which is manual?
Try something out before you discount it.

I live in Sydney and I am very happy with my manual XR5... (and so it the missus)
I invested a few years convincing the missus, and the last 3 cars have all been manual. Having said that, I do not drive to work...

Yes, it's the same gearbox. You might want to check with your dealer if there's an update available.

I was hoping this might apply to the Mondeo. I'm still only 1,500km's into my new MC hatch but that lag from standstill is worrying me.

Eg: The delay from when you hit the accelerator to the transmission engaging is occasionally dangerous when the timing of merging with traffic is tighter (peak hour).

Flicking the box into Sports Mode almost fixes the problem . . . from my perspective, I'd be happy to sacrifice a few economy percentage points for the box to be reprogrammed to ALWAYS have instantaneous response to accelator actuation from standstill. What do others think?

Yea, there's been a couple of times, particularly at busy roundabouts where the lag has been a bit of a concern. Still getting used to it but would prefer a faster response.

Had the 15k service done today, which included a reflash of the powershift transmission. Pleased to say its made a noticeable difference and now the transmission is a pleasure to use in auto mode.

Before the reflash, our car would hold on to the lower gears way too long. If I were to enter a roundabout, it wouldn't change up after entering and seemed to struggle to decide what gear to be in. When cruising it hardly ever hit top gear in auto mode, I always had to change manually. Since the reflash, those issues have been resolved. It now upchanges perfectly and hits top gear just at the right time. Really smooth.

Thanks gh172. Great result. We both have MY11 Mondeo's . . . it's amazing that updates as significant as this are needed for late model cars. The Powershift box has been around for a while now.

Ford sometimes let their customers do the final development work on a new model. I could not believe how much better my new Mondeo (runout MB) is compared to the old car (07 build) MA.

The Japanese use their domestic market to get things right. Just ask anyone in NZ who bought a used Mitsubishi from Japan with the early GDI (direct injection) petrol engine...

It might be in my head but since getting the flash update the car seems to have less of that diesel clatter sound. Really loving the car now!

My Powershift (2011 ZETEC) was holding higher gear for too long and would not drop a gear down, so it was always in the wrong gear for the speed it was traveling at, resulting in vibration and no pick-up.
Also, up-shifting was very jerky with a solid thump which definitely lets you know when the gears are changed.
Since the gearbox update 2 days ago - all is smoooth as and works as it should.

My wife's MA does something similar but also the A/C gets hot when you stop and the temp gauge goes bananas.
Apparently it's the variable speed fan controller. If the fan isn't working properly it affects airflow at standstill so all 3 (A/C condensor, radiator and trans cooler in the radiator) get hot and stuff everything up. It's in now being fixed so I should know tomorrow.

But at least it's fixed!
The car has only done 23000km.

Yep - just had the 15k service done and what a difference . . . it's a totally different and better car to drive. Much less Diesel clatter, better low down torque and the box keeps the engine on the boil now (mapping).

I only wish it was like this from day one. 13 months of of rather disappointing driving all turned around with one reflash on the EMC. D'oh!

I also had my 15,000km service and have noticed improved shifting and no more turbo lag after slowing, then accelerating quickly (like at roundabouts). I've got an ecoboost car so getting rid of that initial lag is a big change (never driven the diesel). Also seems the acceleration is smoother off the line - I noticed some jerkiness almost like the stability/traction control was activating or something. Possibly changed the engine mapping too? I don't know enough about how these cars work to answer it haha

I have just booked my Ecoboost in for its 30k service on Monday; I asked about the flash and they (John Mcgrath Ford) had no idea what I was talking about...!

Just make sure they plug it in for the usual service diagnostics - it will flag any updates and they will be loaded at that point in time; to my knowledge this is a standard service proceedure for the Modeo/Focus/etc range.
