Where did you find the Mercon mentioned?

Do the older boxes need a service? My Focus is a little newer, but it references the 4sp auto box as a 'sealed for life' unit.

Prob best to ask a transmission specialist or call a Ford dealership andd see what they say.

Sealed for life usually means short life! To get the longest out of a transmission you need to change the fluid every few years and ensure they have a external transmission cooler.
Castrol site will give you a way to check what transmission fluid they recommend for the model.

Hi. Castrol and Shell list as refer to dealer and valvoline say maxlife synthetic but not for CVT type autos. Best to talk to your dealer. Cheers MD
