Very interested on people's perception of large vs small car crash/death safety.
Would you rather be in a large sedan at 100klm crash or a small car at 100klm? All models are 5 star cars except the SUV which is just thrown in as a 2 star to see if there are extremists who 100% believe in size matters!(that's ok too) Models used in eg are... large Falcon 5star Small Holden Barina 5 star Light vw up 5 star Chery J11 2 star My personal vote went clearly to the falcon.(vote freely imagining YOUR life is on the line) |

doesn't really bother me. crash safety is a long way down the list of things I look for when buying a car. I would strongly suspect that if you really impact at 100kmh not even 5 star cars are survivable.
IMO if you are worried about how safe your car is if you crash, perhaps you should be spending more time concentrating on not crashing |

the one on the other side of the road
either way, what does it matter? small cars have fantastic crash-ability now so there's not much in it depends on 1) speed of each car 2) angle of impact 3) if any objects are unrestrained in either car 4) etc

Instead of the Cherry you should have put something up like a Nissan Patrol (pretty sure the GQ series rates at 2 stars) as the cherry are no bigger than falcons, they just sit higher.
But this poll is pretty much irrelavent because if you crashed at 100 klicks you'd more than likely be dead regardless of which car your in. Last edited by KAM120; 14-05-2014 at 12:12 AM. |

I wouldn't go the Barina but I'd give it a crack in a Focus, my one served me well.
It depends what you ran into, if you ran into a cliff face it wouldn't matter if you were in a Falcon or a B double, you'd still be dead. |

Oh really.....didn't think you got all those choices in an accident.....I'll check next time I'm in my car going 100kphr and a car swerves suddenly in front of me..... That'd be nice tho!

i didn't say they were choices i'm saying either car could be disadvantaged or advantaged depending on those factors, regardless of size.

I went the cherry to make sure they couldn't revive me.

Yeah I no....but if you don't intend on voting on the poll then there's no need to complicate it with some blaring lay obvious ransoms. I clearly stayed ' if you HAD to be in one or the other'!

I've had several "collisions" above that speed, and walked away unscathed. Depends entirely on WHAT you hit. Hit an immovable object (or worse a truck coming the other way) and yeah, you'd be dead even in a Volvo with 64 air-bags. Hit something light & moveable, like a Roo or Emu (or Hyundai) and its simple physics, you want to be in the heaviest vehicle possible. |

I voted the Chery, just because this is a hang over from another discussion in another thread...
and ANCAP stars don't matter right? 2 star Chinese quality FTW.

I picked the g6e. I have a family and safety on the road pays a big part in what we are purchasing next. Sure you could squeeze you 4 year olds in a barina but I wouldn't want them to be in a accident in that at all as it will just end badly.

I'd pick the G6E, however at a 100Km/h the chances of survival are pretty minimal regardless of what car you are in. The human body struggles to cope with any impact over 70km/h.

Here's a engineers description of a 50km/h side impact into our beloved Falcon.
Thanks to Drive.com All over in the blink of an eye This is a reconstruction of a crash involving a stationary Ford Falcon XT sedan being struck in the driver's door by another vehicle travelling at 50 km/h. One millisecond equals 1/1000th of a second. 0 milliseconds - An external object touches the driver's door. 1 ms - The car's door pressure sensor detects a pressure wave. 2 ms - An acceleration sensor in the C-pillar behind the rear door also detects a crash event. 2.5 ms - A sensor in the car's centre detects crash vibrations. 5 ms - Car's crash computer checks for insignificant crash events, such as a shopping trolley impact or incidental contact. It is still working out the severity of the crash. Door intrusion structure begins to absorb energy. 6.5 ms - Door pressure sensor registers peak pressures. 7 ms - Crash computer confirms a serious crash and calculates its actions. 8 ms - Computer sends a "fire" signal to side airbag. Meanwhile, B-pillar begins to crumple inwards and energy begins to transfer into cross-car load path beneath the occupant. 8.5 ms - Side airbag system fires. 15 ms - Roof begins to absorb part of the impact. Airbag bursts through seat foam and begins to fill. 17 ms - Cross-car load path and structure under rear seat reach maximum load. Airbag covers occupant's chest and begins to push the shoulder away from impact zone. 20 ms - Door and B-pillar begin to push on front seat. Airbag begins to push occupant's chest away from the impact. 27 ms - Impact velocity has halved from 50 km/h to 23.5 km/h. A "pusher block" in the seat moves occupant's pelvis away from impact zone. Airbag starts controlled deflation. 30 ms - The Falcon has absorbed all crash energy. Airbag remains in place. For a brief moment, occupant experiences maximum force equal to 12 times the force of gravity. 45 ms - Occupant and airbag move together with deforming side structure. 50 ms - Crash computer unlocks car's doors. Passenger safety cell begins to rebound, pushing doors away from occupant. 70 ms - Airbag continues to deflate. Occupant moves back towards middle of car. Engineers classify crash as "complete". 150-300 ms - Occupant becomes aware of collision Doesn't add anything just found it interesting. her is a older jag hitting a wall at 110Km/h http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4_UDyT1wnA and a golf at 100km/h http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za2UYb0aXEQ and a focus after a 190Km crash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr5wE0NVUw8 Be careful out there whatever you drive JP |

Yeah, way to skew a poll in favour of the Falcon ...
Notwithstanding that the Barina is a "light" car, in the same class as a Fiesta, Mazda2 etc, and that the Up is a sub-light car, there's still the dubious choice of a tinny Korean Barina and Chinese Chery, which no sane person would buy anyway. Try comparing them with reputable small cars like the Focus or Golf instead. And where's the option for Danny's Megane?

And the thread isn't about skewing anything in favour of anything at all. It's about large car vs smaller cars and what people FEEL is safer to be in at a very dangerous speed with a high chance of injury or death. Insert any large 5 star car vs small vs light 5 star cars you wish. A comment on that would have been preferable! I clearly stated used as an EXAMPLE. Non the less the poll seems to be not just leaning one way......bit more of a landslide atm! |

@ 100 Id rather crash a Cherry into a roo than a falcon into a semi, but since you obviously want Falcon to win i'll say G6E.
Now, if you added GTS to the list this would win as it would be too quick to get hit. |

@ 100k's the Falcon wins only because you'd have a slight chance of survival. The other vehicles you're dead. Energy released/absorbed is squared by the velocity. Using ANCAP tests as a base (which are done at 64km/hr) at 100km/h considerably more energy is involved and would exceed the specifications of all vehicles.

Danny I would have nothing but trust in a smaller car that was 5 star. I personally have 2 5 star cars, a 4 star car and 2 cars that would be best described as no stars. I feel safe in both the mondeo and the missus pulsar. Crash safety was one of the criteria for both purchases.

Why can't I choose a 5-star Ford Ranger, its a bigger car, weighs more and has a longer bonnet...so its heaps safer then the Falcon!
