When charging a battery do I unscrew the caps on top or leave them on?

I usually leave them unless you were trying to jam like 20 amps in only 1 hour

Loosen them; no need to take them all the way off. The risk of a gassing caused explosion is extremely low (usually when some foreign body or bit broken of a cell plate blocks a cap vent) but is still a risk that can be easily avoided.

If its a 5 Amp charger (or less), no need to loosen or remove the caps. Batteries charge up when the car is driving along anyway.

Leave your caps on as there is no need to remove them since they are ventilated, the old rule of removing caps belong to a bygone era.
Most modern chargers monitor your battery condition & adjust accordingly. Only time I remove caps is to check electrolyte level. |
