Default Did Holden use to make home ovens??

I was at a property inspection today and noticed that the kitchen had a very old wall oven. It was a "Frigidaire" and underneath it said "Made by GM Holden". I had no idea that Holden made ovens! Did Ford ever dabble in white goods?

I wouldn't be surprised.

I've got a '39 Oldsmobile at my mums place that has a Holden badge on the side.

Admittedly it's General Motors and all, but they were doing a lot of panel/metal work for other manufacturers prior to being absorbed by GM. They did some work for Ford too I believe.

I was at work in an operating theatre one night, old lady with a fractured hip and she was getting it screwed, about 2am and was a bit bored so I was inspecting the operating table. It had a handle that when you wound it, it pulled the fractured leg straight. The handle had the 'ford" oval embossed on it and a part number. I actually wrote it down and rang Ford. It was off a Bronco.

I think you will find they stopped making ovens in the late 1970s

Frigidaire became a part of GM in 1933 but GM sold off its white goods Frigidaire division to White Consolidated Industries (White Sewing Machines) in 1979. See http://www.assemblymag.com/articles/...ing-milestones

And from the Powerhouse Museum http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/coll...se/?irn=396877

Quote:

Electric stove, Frigidaire, metal, made by General Motors-Holden's Limited, Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, 1960-1968

Snip~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

General Motors saw the need to enter the South Pacific/Asia market by its manufacture of Frigidaire appliances in New Zealand, beginning in 1938. Their decision seems to have been sound as the post-World War II boom of the 1950s led them to increase their appliance manufacturing in the Southern Hemisphere by opening their Dandenong, Victoria, Australia plant in 1956 but, perhaps, a declining market saw Frigidaire manufacturing at Dandenong close in the late 1960s and a final sale of all Frigidaire assets by General Motors in 1979. Frigidaire remains as a top of the line brand of appliance demonstrating the value of the name while General Motors focuses on the manufacture of automobiles and associated core businesses.

That's just like the one I saw except it was an in-built wall oven not a freestanding one.

When Holden were still at their old plant in Adelaide (off port rd) I am sure part of that factory was Fridgidaire. Its typical of bogans though they couldnt spell then 'daire' in my schooling was 'dare'

Yes they did. I've pulled out a Gm caprice wall oven that took 3 men to lift.
Quite different to the run of the mill.

I used to have a GM washing machine. Only GM I have ever owned. Had like a big dildo in it that just went up and down at a furious rate. Heaviest damn thing the world has ever seen. Went to move it when I left the house and it was so damn heavy me and my mate left it there.

Making fun of it...

It's a sad sad reminder that in this country we used to build things...fridges, washing machines, ovens, etc...stuff we simply don't do any more.

Don't laugh at a Holden oven...rather feel sad that we aren't able to buy one any more...

Mate, if you have ever sat in an operating theatre whilst they are doing orthopaedic surgery and see what actually goes on, you would think it is very very medieval. A bit like panelbeating.
