Default No more Holden V8 post VF

Holden will stop making the V8 in 2017, citing ‘changing’ technology

From news.com.au

AUSSIE V8 fans will have to get used to four-cylinder and V6 power for their future performance sedans, the Asia-Pacific boss of General Motors Stefan Jacoby has confirmed what has long been feared.
The Holden V8 will die once manufacturing comes to an end at Holden’s factory in Elizabeth in South Australia at the end of 2017.
In an interview with Australian media at the Frankfurt motor show overnight, Mr Jacoby said: “The world obviously is changing and the V8 period is coming to an end.”
The V8 is the single biggest-selling version of the current Holden Commodore and one of the few models not to go down in sales.

But Mr Jacoby said buyers would have to get used to the new world order.
“It is just more or less a perception from the customer they need a big engine and big horsepower to have the performance,” said Mr Jacoby.
“I know they are charming and I like the sound of the V8 but times are changing. The technology is changing with more or less the same performance. The acceptance is changing, even in America.”
There is also no chance that Holden might import a budget-priced V8 sedan from the USA.
Holden currently exports the Commodore V8 to North America where it is sold as a Chevrolet.
But there are no plans for Chevrolet to develop a successor in 2018.

That (US car) phases out when we see manufacturing end in Australia,” said Mr Jacoby.
The GM executive insisted that the next generation Holden Commodore, likely to be imported from Germany, will still have “the same fun to drive same sportiness” as the current car, even though it won’t have a V8.
Holden is also said to be planning on introducing the next generation Corvette, but it will likely cost in excess of $100,000.
That means Holden’s arch rival Ford will be the only brand with an affordable V8 in its showrooms within two years.
The Ford Mustang, available with four-cylinder or V8 power, arrives in Australia in December priced from $45,000 to $65,000.

So Ford will own this market, damn it I hope they nail it!

Does that mean Chrysler will stop selling their V8 sedan in 2017 ?

Big gap in the market for a us v8 powered sedan that fiat/Chrysler group will be eying off. They are really the only manufacturer that can fill the void with their current line up.

Holden, always with some suitable spin at the ready, but they don't come from the solid 'do no wrong' platform any more perhaps they forget their spin may actually be interpreted now and not just swallowed. Feels like another 4 cyl Commodore moment. Yet...a element of truth. Well, except for eliminating the V8 altogether. While the world may be creeping in the direction of small(er) capacity FI fours and sixes the VF has sung loud and clear we just ain't in that headspace yet. 'Lets Go There' has just taken on new meaning.

Course obviously if he's right then bye bye V8 Vette, Camaro etc in the U.S. Oh hang on, apparently this new world is just little old low volume Australia that he's trying to justify.

And tech is definitely changing no doubt. Ask the Coyote 32 valve quad VCT EIGHT and that instant dinosaur the 5.2 Voodoo. Grunty and more efficient than ever. Nobody wants them, right? A fellow who was deposed from the country's highest office was accused of not respecting people's intelligence....

And yet they are canning it.

Yet another example of an auto maker telling people what they want rather than listening to what they want. They deserve what they have coming.

I wonder what it means for their V8 Supercar involvement? Motorsport and Holden go hand in hand in this country. Ford teams should have the Mustang I'd imagine, what for the red team?

The only reason there saying V8s are finished is because they wont have 1 to sell after Commodore.

As much as I despise the lame lion and the usual characters who support the red team, this post really got me thinking things would be rather boring with just Ford offering a V8 locally sold option. Kind of like having light with no darkness, cops with no robbers, cats with no mice, all friends and no enemies, etc

Its like 1985 on the other foot! Difference now is 4 pots actually have some poke.

You can see why V8SC's needed to change too.

I did not know that Holden still made V8s. Are they not all Chevrolet V8s in Commodores? You will have to excuse my ignorance on this subject as my automotive passions do not extend to any knowledge of Holden products of the Commodore era...

We will have to buy TWO VFII SS's (or more preferably FGII 'sprint' xr 6/8s) and keep one away to drive when the wheels are driven off of the first! LOL!

Technology has advanced in engine development, cylinders and cubes don't mean so much anymore.
2016 Ford GT, V6 TT.

Even in racing V8s are the dominant platform anymore.

Though in saying that, they only said Holden V8 is finished, nothing about any other GM product coming here.

Have a look who wrote the story, this bit

"Holden is also said to be planning on introducing the next generation Corvette"

Is typical Josh Dowling speculation, GM have stated a number of times the Corvette will not be made in RHD and will not wear a holden badge.

Yeah but that's not Holden. The V8 in a Holden is DEAD. Even if the Camaro and Corvette come here they are not a Holden!!!

The V8 Holden market will always have a demand and given V8's are a large percentage of Commodore sales, I think it will be stupid for GM to ignore especially given the Mustang is here and in good demand.

Ford did this in the late 80's early 90's saying V8's are dead and stopped offering them and look at what that did for their mass market apeal.

Yes the dinosaur push rod v8 that Chev/holden uses is dead but newer tech v8's are still big sellers in high end euro and US and the performance vs efficency vs emissions balance is starting to get very exciting

So what?
If they can leverage off the Camaro/Corvette/whatever and sell it through the same dealers, it is still a V8 available through GM, Holden's parent company.
They may change their branding a bit but if the product is available then I can't see the issue. I wouldn't care they had a Camaro here with a Chev, Holden or Opel badge on it, the guts of the car is the same no matter what.

Lot's of focus in the article and thread about cylinder counts and configuration. No more V8, yeah ok, bad news for many.

But I think the more important question is why?

And of course the answer is because post VF the Commodore will be a dis-proportioned, unbalanced, engine mounted transversely hanging out in front of the front wheels, Front Wheel Drive piece of garbage with nothing to distinguish it from the hordes of other imported FWD econo-boxes from Asian countries except the Lion badge.

Happy days ahead!

For now Mustang is in OK Demand. But no doubt Holden will be watching its progress.
But it would need to land a Camaro here for the same sort of money

Chrysler, will be the one reaping the rewards having the Sedan.
