Great news for the Country town of Bendigo.
How good are these ZF transmissions.

About time our government realised the importance of having stuff like this made locally.

Great news, for once. Just hope it doesn't end up as Collins-Class subs v2.0

The Collins Class is brilliant, one of the most successful subs ever in war games against the massive U.S. navy. Also has a lot more range and capability even against brand new subs being produced right now.

its service life has been extended a couple of times as they are holding up well

I cant help thinking why they just don't take the lessons learned and build an improved new version of the Collins for the Navy. Its not like our requirements for a diesel/electric sub have suddenly changed.

Runs a 6HP gearbox. Only thing it's missing is the option for the Barra I6T for civilian use ;)

Sorry, not inferring the sub itself was the problem but the whole expense and issues building them.

As is often the case with development and construction projects for something as big and complicated as a submarine, problems are bound to arise. Unfortunately with the Collins class, poor project management and selecting a 1400 ton design optimised for the cold shallow waters of the Baltic sea and transmogrifying it into a 3000 ton long range sub for the warm, biologically rich waters of Asia and Australia, was bound to cause headaches.

As for the Hawkei - I wonder if they would consider adapting the design for civvie or commercial/mining use? There's about a tonne of composite armour in it alone, but its monocoque construction might be a sticking point for some.
