Yes they screwed up - that should be the Skoda Octavia. Skoda make the family cars in VAG, VW basically makes single person/childless-couple cars.

Good to see the Fabia there as a recommended first car. It's really great, extremely comfortable and so much internal space for its size (like all their cars). Just hate VW's DSG gearbox but that's a personal thing.

Superb and Mondeo should have been the contenders for the best family car over $30k. Mazda has never been a leader in the space race.

Mondeo does not come with rear air con vents on the Ambiente (the only spec available as a petrol wagon)

It can still function as a family car but I would agree with you on that.
My question was more around the fact the statement implied that a Golf (or equivalent) could not be a family car, that it must be a 3 box sedan that can tow a house, carry 3 baby seats, RWD and go back in time.

Family of 2 adults, 2 kids would be considered average, I'd like to see them in this on a family holiday for a week, especially when the kids are teenagers,

Spent two weeks driving holiday in a little rental Mitsubishi ASX. 2 adults, 2 kids and all their gear such as luggage etc. it did it fine, it did actually make reevaluate how big of car do we actually need. Especially as most small cars are actually quite big and the hatch ones are quite versatile. I would think a Golf would be a great car for a young family.

I think I could just manage a weeks holiday in my Golf with the wife and 2 young kids (2&4).
The AWD system means I get a smaller boot than the FWD versions but you would be surprised how much you can get in.
Everyone has plenty of room inside and it very comfortable also.
If I had teenagers it would be a bit too cramped and I imagine they would want to bring a lot of crap which wouldn't fit.

I am surprised it won considering dieselgate, poor customer service and ongoing electrical issues - go into any VW forum and there are tons of electrical issues being reported - mine still isn't fixed after 15 weeks so I am overly bitter towards these cheating german ba$tards.

I think its an awesome car but how many people, hand on your heart, would buy one when you have $100k to play with?

You can pencil in the Mustang for next years winner then, that or the Focus RS.

This forum goes through varies phases. At one stage considerable amount of people were praising Hyundai as the Gods greatest gift to human kind and now it seems there's large pool of people jumping on to the Skoda bandwagon.

In all honesty I'm surprised not a single Toyota, Holden or Subaru made the list. I was so sure a Camry or Commo of some form would have made it. And lets be honest, Subaru's are just downright amazing cars.

Golf sized cars are the norm in Europe where many use it as a daily family get around car irrespective of the age and size of the kids.

However, it's only in Aus and Us where folks prefer to commute in comfort opting for a large sedans. But I see this trend changing lately with the sales of smaller cars increasing ever more.

Buying a car for a specific non regular activity is a bit strange. It's like me buying a Ranger/Hilux because once very year or two i need to move a few items around.

A family car is something that can do most genera activities required of a family, transporting them around comfortably, enough room in the boot to fit the shopping or anything else and should do it for a reasonable cost. Not forgetting the so called small hatches these days have as much interior room as medium/large cars about 30 years ago had. Same if not more power too.

The point of cars like Fiesta ST is that you can have fun without spending the coin. Buy the car on its merits and pocket the 70K odd left over.

And yes, look out for Mustang and Focus RS (particularly the RS)

Some really weird choices I have to admit. Since when is a vw golf a family sedan ??? You can fit a family in a dual cab ute but that doesn't put it in the family car class. And tesla..... car of the year...... what...... who the heck is buying those things in large numbers in australia??? How are they even relevant at the moment??? They seem like a novelty at the moment to me.
