A yank with a sense of humour is a rarity indeed (seen him away from silly Friends). Inspired choice this...

I wonder if this was part of the plan all along, or a last minute scramble when people reacted poorly to David Coulthard and Sabine Schmidt being linked as co hosts.

I remember he was a special guest on some show here years ago in Australia and he could hardly string 2 words together.

I think there are millions of car/motorsport fans that agree with you. Cant wait for their (Clarkson, Hammond and May) new show. At least we know they wont get car sick (I do like Chris evens though) but not as a car show host. I think that bullet is firmly lodged in the BBC's foot now.

And that's why he's got the role. Eye candy for the female viewers & for males that bat for the wrong side. He has the ability to punt a car around pretty well - but I think he'll struggle to talk & be entertaining whilst also driving.

Interesting. I thought he was funny on Friends. But Clarkson is a hard act to follow!
I would've hired Jay Leno or Mr Bean.

Having just finished the last season of Episodes last night, I was delighted to learn of this.

Watched an old show with him as the "celebrity in a reasonably priced car" or whatever they call it. He was the fastest around their track. Can't get that visual out of my head blakef6.

A few thoughts come to mind. From someone a 2 thirds her age, "nothing special" certainly isn't one.

Someone mentioned rowan Atkinson too. I personally think he would be the perfect candidate, as someone who is a car enthusiast, races, is extremely intelligent and hilarious.
