Default How are the storms in SA?

As a bit of a weather enthusiast, I always have the weather radar open in a browser tab while at work on the computer. I've been watching the severe storm hitting that region.

Anyone from SA able to say what's happening on the ground?

Also curious. Hope everyone down that way is safe and well. Been checking the radar aswell. Always a bit worrying when the rain rate colour is the dark red.

Well it was a beautiful clear, sunny morning. Clouds and a bit of wind started around 10 then around 11 heavy rain, lightning and strong winds hit until about 1:30. Currently, the sun is shining through the clouds, it's not raining but it is still a bit blowy. Looking at the radar, it will hit again soon!

Thanks everyone for your responses, looks like some wind and a lot of rain (and possibly a nice light show) is on the way to me in Melbourne.

I'm sitting here on the iPad by candle light, I was in MT barker when the power went out at 4pm and had to drive down the freeway back to the north east suburbs to get home. The lightening was epic, I've never seen lightening flashes visible in daylight except for today, really close.
At one stage the rain was so heavy that 2 lanes of traffic were only doing 20kph because visibility was nil.
I have been in hills supermarkets yesterday and today and they were all selling candles, batteries and torches as everyone prepares for no power.
The whole length of portrush road had no traffic lights operating and not one had a cop on point either, it seems they were at the major intersections instead. But despite this it was the fastest run I'd ever had along that road not getting stuck at red lights, cars were stopping to let others go and generally behaving themselves.

I can imagine the dudes working at the power station looking at their troubleshooting procedure which is just some fancy flow charts, which inform them to ring their help desk line and someone in India is asking them if they've tried turning the power station off and on again

So an update, by about 7:30pm I couldn't access mobile data and my phone was dropping in and out of sos/gprs (!), my candle power wasn't sufficient to read a book, so I got in my car to give the phone some charge.
Went to my mums place, she was ok, kinda like a survivalist only nuttier with candles everywhere, her power had come back on so I found a servo, filled up there was a line up, and the shop was full of people buying food and candles. Power is patchy, my neighbourhood is on apart from 5 houses in my street including mine FML, but data is available.
Talkback/news radio has exploded with all the beryls and Normans phoning in wondering how this could have happened, and if they miss cold case, then heads will roll tomorrow, so just the usual Adelaide overreaction.

The interconnector to Victoria failed....but why wouldn't the second one handle it? or maybe they only have one?

Senator Xenophon said one of the “great paradoxes” of the situation was that the wind turbine generators, which supply 40 per cent of the state’s power, did not work when the wind was blowing too hard.

That’s not a paradox, thats government style central planning in action.

You think you've seen bad driving.
Last nights drive home took dickheadness to a new level.

My drive from work to home is typically 25-30 minutes.
Yesterday I did that run with not a single set of traffic lights operating (I'm sure it was llike that everywhere) and it took just over an hour and a half.
I saw 4 accidents.
Actually more like 3 because the lady in front of me hit the ute in front of her TWICE within a minute. We were barely crawling and she ran into the back of him. He pulled his car to the side and she followed and hit him again, this time 4, 5 times harder than the first hit. Wow. The guy was rightly ****ed. What an idiot, absolute no reason for that to occur. First tap broke his number plate surround. 2nd hit, had her bonnet folded up like a tent and a big dent across his tailgate.

4WDs launching into a tiny break in the traffic only to have to slam on brakes to avoid collecting the stopped cars ahead. You're sitting higher up than me and I can see its a total jam up ahead so why can't you see the road is blocked and speeding for 15 meters does nothing but create danger.

Cop cars running down median strips, fire trucks shooting off one way, ambos the other. People reversing on main roads trying to make gaps for them.

Those cops with the lit batons at the intersections need a medal. I would not be surprised if a few were run down last night, it was that chaotic where I was, it felt like the scene from Jumanji... I was idling along waiting for the elephants and monkeys to march past.

Ha, do you type this on your desktop PC, as you sip on a freshly brewed coffee from your home barista delonghi, shortly after taking a hot shower whilst you charged your phone?

We haven't had power since yesterday arvo, which isn't the worst as such; although having gas heating right now would've been handy for a hot shower this morning. Would've been worse if it was 40 degree heat.

A few fallen tree and some horrible weather, but I'm sitting at home atm as a large part of my job requires internet servers and computer access.

Flights have been cancelled and hospitals are running on emergency power.

My power was out for 20 hrs, I now have a freezer full of compost. The last time I was out for 12 hours I got a $ 90 cheque from SA Power networks.
Now the wind is gusting even worse than yesterday, pizzling down with rain, I went into 3 Bunnings today, all of them had been smashed in the torch and battery aisle.
Now to warm up the house and charge the devices before the power dies again.

I've got 4 Coleman camping lanterns, plus a couple of their headlamps, and buy bulk batteries from eBay for just this sort of occurrence.

You can also get those small power packs off eBay for charging your mobile, got a few of those too, keep it all in my "****, the powers out again" kit.

pretty much opened a bottle of red among candlelight and drank the night away.

Tonight we still have power, but the wind is blowing something fierce. Will be interesting to see the carnage tomorrow morning.
