Default More ford Australia redundancies

Heard a whisper that there's been ford development staff retrenched this afternoon from broadmeadows , any one know if that's true or not?

Well how long could they keep a full crew of staff developing only one model of foreign made car?

You do realise there is more engineering people there now then when local manufacturing was going on.

I spoke to someone not 6 months ago that secured their design/dev based role after the Falcon manufacturing had ceased. Seemed sure enough there was plenty of work. Disappointing if true

edit - just read the caradvice article, some positivity in there regarding the $13mil injection etc

gutted really that after developing such an awesome product the Yanks are taking it back. I feel really sorry for the powertrain guys who are being hit now, but I honestly believe the long slow fuse has been lit for the rest of us too.

I have been expecting change, but not this :(

I questioned this in the VW/Ford thread and had a feeling something like this was in the works.

My point still stands.

How long will the American company, who builds cars in Asia maintain a full crew of Australian workers?

Chinese people hate Americans - it's the reason GPC bought out Repco as they're trying to break into the Asian market but no American company has been successful so they'll use Australians to do the bidding on behalf of the Americans.

Who gives a flying **** about a highly competitive market with only 25M people when the billions of people in Asia are on our doorstep and we've already got a fairly good relationship with them.

Yes there are some redundancies but they are actually hiring in the design section as well.. So pending on what skill engineering your from, powertrain is reduced, but design is increased!

Inevitably, as i think I mentioned long ago, companies will go wherever the cheapest labour is. Australia is not that place at the moment, nor has it been for some time - nor will it be for who knows how long.

On the same note Toyota's PPD (product and planning) is ramping up and taking on more people. Maybe these people can jump ship.

it's a lot more involved than all of that. Hackett has been taking stick for some time now about the slow pace of change, and in fact the shares have fallen more under his leadership than they did under Fields. Part of the change that the whole company is going through is to move to modular architectures, and only 5 vehicle groups. What that means for Ford Australia is that the T6 platform will now be combined with the T3 platform and lead out of North America. Short term there are immediate powertrain job losses, but longer term after we launch the next gen Ranger, it really doesn't look like there will be any more engineering work for us here.

Does that mean you think over 1500 Australian jobs will need to be cut around 2021-22?

This statement really does highlight what unfortunately was always going to come to an end. They made great achievements while it lasted.

Sorry to hear simon, cars guide article suggested the past 2021 ranger would share a frame / floor plan with f series so if that's true I can't see the yanks choosing Aussies over themselves.

Let's face it ...We are literally at the whim of others ..sentiment does not exist in the car industry. That said , these Ford development workers have no doubt given a lot towards cars many of us will drive in the future and let's hope any who get the flick will find some other ways to keep in the loop .

Ford could do a lot worse by minimising job losses to our mob because we do know a thing or two about decent cars IMO.

Hang in there Mate. If working for Ford is your preferred option, then aim to work yourself into a position they'll need for some time yet... and start working on a back-up plan (for "just in case"). Do as much networking as you can... make yourself known, etc.

If you can't see a future with Ford... then use this time to actively find something else/better... and plan your exit strategy (take charge of the situation)

Sometimes the next great opportunity won't present itself until the last one has gone ! (ie: some places won't poach you... but they'll pounce if they know you're looking/available/etc).

There's always a future somewhere... it's just that it's not always easy to see from where you are standing now !

Good luck going forward... I hope things work out great for you

All sad to hear but not surprising that the Americans would grab back a truck platform and fold the
ED under their own programs, including T6s and Ranger under F150 offers lots of financial protection.

Sucks that Ford AP developed Ranger and made it a hit around the world, now the yanks jump in
and call it their own. We know they will lazy azz dev on export RHD vehicles just like they did with
Mustang, that's the elephant in the corner playing a banjo.

Americans can thank Trump for trying to protect their local manufacturing.

As for us, we seem to be always stuck with weak leaders happy to give away any remaining industries we have.

This is the short version.
The government doesn't want to support local manufacuring or worse, pay to keep jobs here.
It prefers to take in easy mining royalties as guaranteed income linked to long term contracts.
On the other side of this, every finished good that comes into our country is subject to import duty and GST.

The logic,
Govt does less and gets more.

There are very few duties left on imports and the rate on those is 5%. No point in duties if you don't make the products locally. Freight rates are a bigger impediment to imports than duties.
