Default Best Broadband Deal

Well I nearly fell off the chair in front of the pc last night when she who must be obeyed told me about our latest bill, sheeesh, now I have received all the stuff from Telstra about larger plans and thought about getting the Optus prices but haven't as yet. As we all download a fair amount, who is happy with their current plan and which one is it.

I love my optus plan. Optus Cable, $60 a month, 12 gig per month and unlimited off peak (midnight to 6am).
If you go over then they just reduce the speed but never charge extra.

Considering just 2 years ago it was $100 a month for 5gig, Optus have really improved dramatically. Oh, and its a 12Mbps connection.. SMOKEN!!

Well many years ago when I first became a net addict, I tried all different companies for my dial up access. I found Ozemail to be the most reliable and although not the very cheapest, at least competetive.

Now I won't bother with anyone else. My m-i-l is with Optus and feels she has made a mistake (issues with speed and viruses), and we're on Ozemail's unlimited broadband plan. $49.95 a month but only 256k speed at this stage. If I want it faster I have to pay for it. But we're quite happy with 256k, cos it's so much better than dial up!

If you're shopping try here http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-plan.cfm for help.

I have adsl with internode. Its not the cheapest but they're very reliable and I have no probs with them.

I'm with iiNet, and it's $49.95 flat with 10Gig peak, 10 Gig offpeak, on a 1.5Meg link. They just drop the speed down if I exceed my quota for the month.

Waiting for them to install their own hardware on my phone exchange so I can get up to 12Meg link.

This is a list of 'Internet Service Providers' in Victoria:

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-list.cfm?loc=1

You don't have to stick with Telstra, or Optus, to get a good deal (in fact they are far from the best value for money).

Also, take a look around the discussion forums to get an idea of the good and bad with them all. I was also going to suggest iiNet, as a good ISP.

Ozemail is now owned by iiNet.

Go to www.iinet.net.au, and you're there.

They are national, so no probs [unless you live in the middle of the
nullabor]

BTW, there's a small catch - to qualify for $49.95, you have to have your landline and national/international/calls to mobile services with them as well - they call it iiPhone.

I was with IPrimus then changed to iinet on the same deal as yourself & moved with the phone also. The inclution of landline in the plan also doubles your download limit.

same, with iiNet here to...

80GB (40GB peak/ 40GB off peak) downloads a month (and going to be on a iiDSLAM soon - ADSL2) so 12Mbit speeds (compared to Telstra and Optus which offer 'high end speed' of 1.5Mbit : ) ...

$89/month

really happy, great customer service, and the fastest speeds in Aus (s#!ts all over Telstra and Optus speed wise) ... **

** you can get the incredibly fast speeds if you are one of their DSLAMs - if not - you still get 1.5Mbit (which is faster than a lot of Telstra and Optus speeds) **

It's amazing what deals you can get when you tell a provider you're going to leave. Just last saturday i went to telstra to cancel my mobile phone and new internet connection to swap over to another company they come out and offer me a deal that was better than any other deal we'd seen. When I asked why I hadnt heard of it before, the reply was that they only offer those to keep people's business with them!

Ended up with a $79 cap for $550 calls for the mobile and $39/month for unlimited adsl

[EDIT]: (notice you did mention it was telstra - I asked you if it was in my post before I edited it)

you'll probably find their unlimited plan brings in shaping once you download 10GB - i.e. you are restricted to dial-up speeds for the rest of the month. it's not really unlimited...

also you are probably also (for that price) restricted to a speed of around 256kbps (.25Mbit) whereas on some providers you can get over 12Mbit (i.e. 48 times faster) ... Telstra's broadband is not really broadband :(

also, if it's a $79 cap for the mobile and it's $550 worth of calls, and it's with telstra, I think you might even be better off with the Vodafone $79 cap (which gives $500 worth of calls) because the call rates are so much cheaper than Telstra's, that you actually get MORE from the smaller $'s of calls (i.e. Vodafone $500 > Telstra $550)

Just so you understand that paragraph - Telstra call rate are 50c per 30 seconds, Vodafones are 30c per 30 seconds... The $79 vodafone cap gives you much more calls than the Telstra one because the calls are cheaper... So their $500 = Telstra's $800 or so (rough guess) ... plus Vodafone charge per second - Telstra charge per 30second block - i.e. if you use 31 seconds, you get charged for 1 minute. on Vodafone - you get charged for 31 seconds - so you'll save even more money! and Vodafone offer that to all their customers

you might know all this already, but i just thought i'd mention it so you can check the deal you are getting - because it might still be crap compared to what you could get elsewhere...

** for the record - i don't work for any of these companies.. I just know Telstra offer very dodgy deals and try to inform people who might not notice their fine print :p I use to be with them - never again. they are such a rip off ** i'll now go take a sedative...

I am with internode too, $49 a month for 15 gig i think, and they have NEVER let me down.

isn't that rather pricy for only 256/64kbps ? I mean even places like TPG offer 1.5Mbit (6 times faster) and 20GB (not peak / off peak as far as i am aware - it's 20GB anytime) download for $49.95 a month ...

i aggree with the previous post by loxxr6, use broadband choice for the best way to find good plans...

I did some research & asked a few knowledable individuals & found Iprimus to be Great value with the land line & broadband package although I have heard their land line service is Sh#t. In saying that they were ultra competative.

Check out the Whirlpool Forum mentioned earlier and go with Internode. They offer great support and their infruststrucure is state of the art. Visionary owner Simon Hacket. Maybe not the cheapest but definitely one of the best.

I'm with Ozemail on the 256K $49.95 "unlimited" plan.

My experience is that the re-sellers like Ozemail suffer with poor service from Telstra. Even after I had paid up it took months to get a reliable broadband signal to my street and you would not believe the amount of stuffing around I got. It wasn't until the 4th Telstra techo spend half a day at my place that my signal was fixed.

Ozemail played hard ball on me cancelling the remainder of my contract too.

I can't wait until the 18 months are up, then I can shop around for a faster service, I like the sound of the 1.5M TPG service.

iiNet, i've got 1.5Mbs with 10GB +10GB. Very reliable, and awesome 24/7 phone support if you ever get stuck, and can bundle home phone as well...too easy.
BTW, Ozemail is now owned and run by iiNet, so ozemail subscribers now get those great iiNet plans.

tpg is great. i used to work in telstra tech support for adsl..they suck. i hated working there cos of the dodgy stuff we were made to do. tpg is used by almost all of the telstra management!!! 50 a month for 20 gig download at 1.5. pretty good! ultra reliable...
