Default Busted something and didn't know?

Okay, so I've been getting around for the last two and a bit weeks in a bit of pain. After messing around with a mate of mine, stirring each other up and whatnot, I ended up hurting my rib and we called it quits. I was sore for the first week, thinking it would go away, but then it started to get worse.

After the first week, the pain started getting worse day by day. I worked saturday morning, but we'd knocked off at around lunch time and the mate I went to visit in Ringwood East wasn't home, so I decided I'd scoot around the corner to the Maroondah Hospital and see if they could work out what I'd done and what they could do to help it.

A few questions later an x-ray was taken, and I was told I'd broken my rib. :

So today, I went to work with the help of a couple of painkillers and we were all talking about injuries you had that you didn't know about, which is why I thought I'd start this topic.

Who here has gotten around with a broken bone or something on the inside damaged that you didn't know about? There's gotta be some good stories.

2 different times in my life.

Had a busted nose, never knew it

Broke 2 toes (big toe and second toe) and hobbled around for 3 weeks with it. Nothing the Docs could do after that anyhow.

I tore all the ligaments in my ankle and kept walking around on it until it got to the size of a large grapefruit and started to get a nice purple blue tinge and went numb.

Yep another little toe here, only I felt every minute of it. Stumbling around in the dark (probably 5am) one totally frosty winter morning, was walking down the hallway and reckoned I was dead centre, but unfortunately I was about a foot to the right. Mid stride through the doorway, little toe connected perfectly end-on with the doorframe! Let me tell you, to kick a doorframe with a fully weighted stride, focussed entirely onto a freezing cold little toe, is NOT my idea of a jolly fun time.

Didn't get to a doctor for a few days, and only then did the X-ray confirm it was a fracture.

Hurt like hell for a few weeks, swelled up so I couldn't wear shoes (looked great going to work in a suit and one thong!), and has been a bit crooked ever since. Such a tiny bone, so much hurt! :

This one didnt happen to me, but when playing a soccer game one of my team-mate got bowled over by an opposition player got up. Kept playing for a couple of minutes until someone noticed that he broke his arm. His arm broke at a 45 degree angle. Apparently he never noticed or felt it.

Ive done a few busted toes.

i busted my foot after kicking a basketball pole, which was cut about 6 inches off the ground.
I sat a soccer ball on it, took a huge run up and went BANG, the bang was my foot not hitting the ball, but the pole which was embeded into the basketball court.

After 2 days of not being able to walk, sleep, i got an X-Ray, turned out a fractured my foot, but they couldnt put it in a cast or anything like that.

I learnt my lesson pretty quickly.

My younger brother got around for 3 days with 2 broken wrists after falling backwards off a 6 foot high fence, dad wouldnt believe he suffered any injuries till mum tok him to the doctors to reveal the truth. HAHAHA

Did something to my wrist about 5 weeks ago. A knuckle is still swollen so I'm guessing something aint right. Too lazy and don't have the time to go to the doctor.

I've done that running into my parents room to start the fax machine once.
Their door's on an angle, compared to the rest of the hallway and I couldn't turn in time. The fax was promptly forgotten. There was an almighty crack and a lot of pain, but I never did anything about it, other than to put a bag of peas over it.

Toes hurt when your do something to them. I ripped my nail off my little toe, on the bed post about 2 weeks ago. The pain was horrible. Blood everywhere. A lot of offensive language was expressed.

I came off my dirtbike once, and clean broke the bone in my big toe. I couldnt have my my leg perpendicular to the ground or the blood flow hurt too much (those with broken toes know what i mean) but i wasnt going to go to hospital for it. However, my little brother had fallen off his motorbike a few hours later and went to hospital with a smashed (literally) ankle, and whilst he was getting cat scans or whatever, i got my sore toe looked at and it was found to be broken. Nothing they could do, not even crutches. The pain got worse after a day or so, I couldnt touch the ground with my foot for near 2 weeks, and my toe still ached ~5 months later (yes, really!)

The worse one though was when i fell off my bike again and hurt my wrist/arm. Had nausea etc, and i've broken a few bones, so i know it's a sure sign you've stuffed something, so i got x-rays. The doctor said "it isnt broken, but i'll send the x-rays off for a second opinion"... My wrist hurt, but the pain was bearable, so he didnt even bandage it.

3 weeks later i get a call from the doc, who says "turns out your arm IS broken after all, you'll need a cast on that for 3 weeks..." I replied with "it's been without a cast and broken for three weeks, it feels as though it's getting better, i dont think i need a cast since you've taken so long... with those x-rays" I didn't get a cast. Now my wrist has a party trick style weird painless dislocation/double joint thing happening, looks like it would hurt, but i dont feel it.

Oh, back to my brother again, and a story of how bad some hospitals can be. He broke his neck off his XR400 (age 16, was being VERY stupid* - see footnote), and had no idea it was broken, but had massive concussion (couldnt speak only murmur due to the knock to his head) so an ambulance was called. The first hospital discovered (and take note) "2 cracked vertibrae". He was transeferred to another hospital which said "1 clean broken, 2 cracked" Transferred again, but that hospital I dont recall what they said. Last hospital, the spinal unit at some hospital in melbourne, said "5 vertabrae, all broken clean through..." Turns out the specialist who was looking at his neck, reconstructed his ankle because both cases were so severe and he was the best "bone-person" (orthopaedic surgeon?) in Australia at the time... Anyways, not only did HE not know what he broke, but neither did 3 hospitals he went to! He also had a suspected (by him, he has weird bumps there now) broken arm, and his other ankle, but due to the severity of his neck, they were not attended to at all.

*stupid = kneeling on the seat of the bike doing a mono (wheelstand) for around 2 km's causing the non-dry-sump 400cc motor to seize dramatically at ~100km/h and throw him through 2 gum trees and a fence. Oh, and a guide-post.

I broke my leg while skiing, took a tumble and heard a click, thought nothing of it and did a couple of more runs down the slope, then walked 1.5km to the car, before then i didnt really feel it, but boy did i feel it in the ride home, i was in a lot of pain for the 3 hr trip home.

Went to the docs and turns out i'd broken it just below the knee.

Broke my arm jumping over a fence and didn't know it. Played footy with it and found out a month later.

stepped on a chain-link fence, about 6 inches above the ground, at about 9pm walking around a footy oval. went ИИИИ up and broke my big toe. still hurts today, and havent regained full movement without severe pain. broken both feet at least twice playing basketball, and torn ligaments in both knees. Also broke a rib or two mucking around with younger brother a few years ago. fairly excruciating, constant pain.

younger brother re-located his thumb a few years back in a stupid BMX mishap. snapped the bone just near his wrist, twisted the thumb almost 180 degrees back towards his elbow and pushed it up so it was almost poking through the skin. spent 7 hours in outpatients only to be given a temporary cast and a panadol. ended up having surgery to reposition his thumb two days later. friggin useless hospital. doc had to kneel on the table and use all his weight to snap it back into place.

Folks used to have a Suzuki King Quad 300cc 4 wheeler, farm bike spec of course, back when they owned the farm. Had plenty of fun moments and adventures on it!

Anyway, was up the top paddock, my mate was riding and I was being dinked. As per usual we were playing up on it, doing ~70km/h snakies up a fairly dry paddock, bloody huge ones too, I'd reckon the rear end was getting 70 degree out each way. Of course this is pushing it way to far and the bike gripped up full lock and rolled. The rear metal rack must have landed across my left foot as it was hurting a little bit... and my mate had lost his left boot in the rollover which was no where to be seen.

He was saying "where has my boot gone?" and in reply I yelled "who gives a $h!t, the bike is rolling away down the hill!!!". I ended up having to chase the bike down as he was more concerned about his boot, and I ended up finding his boot stuck under the front left mudguard.

After walking around on my foot for a week and it not getting any better I decided to get it checked, turned out three bones in my foot were fractured, one being about 5 thou off a full break.

I still owe a break for that one Gino!!!

oh, and have broken my nose twice playing AFL footy and they seriously hurt!!!

I was playing on a see-saw with my little brother (little being taller than me but 1 year younger) and he was being an idiot and banging the end of it every time he hit the ground which shook my end so much I would almost fall off. Well I got jack of it and when my end hit the ground next I just got off...which left my brother to plummet to the ground with one leg under the see-saw. Snapped it good but left only a mild graze on his leg. My mum made him walk home on it thinking he was carrying on over the graze..didn't find out till the next day when he was still crying and complaining that it was very broken. I felt awful but justified.

My first tour nam in 69, we were taking fire and giving it back quite severly, after about 30 mins, nvr withdrew leaving a couple of their number dead, paul a mate of mine advises that i was leaking a bit of fluid.. turns out i was hit in the upper arm by small arms fire. i didn't even notice it until he pointed it out..not uncommon in the circumstances..
