Question Spotted...BA with side exhaust

Hi all,
Spotted a Grey BA XR today with a side exhaust (half way between the rear drivers side wheel arc and the rear bumper.
Is this a common mod for BA's ?

It looked real. I was sitting at a set of lights and checked it out.
I couln't see the exhaust coming out form the rear. It could have been a fake?

on a post 1970 car it would be illegal if it was before the rear wheel. this is after,
Quote:

so it shouldnt be an issue as long as its not sticking out too far. we have these on our F1 and ive seen it on a few newer utes (el's etc).

never seen it on a BA though.

This was flush with the rear bumper. It must have been a fake. It had what looked like exhaust dust around the outlet.

I didn't think it was illegal. I thought that all side exhausts had to be no further forward then the last 25% of the most rear side opening window (sorry to those in 7 seater 4wd's and torago;s - lol)...

Yeah there was a red ute in NZ featured in a recent magazine with exhaust exiting in front of rear wheels. Legal in NZ apparently...

My understanding of the Rules are that there needs to be a certain distance between the rearmost opening side window and the exhaust outlet, hence the illegality of most side exiting exhausts on sedans etc. Utes tend to not have this issue.

I have a mate with an imported F150 (1998 model) that has a side exiting exhaust that exits just in front of the driver’s side rear wheel. It's not prominent, just a 2 1/2" tip slightly protruding. He's never had an ounce of trouble with "the Law" even though the truck stands out like a sore thumb and has many times had the law circling it for a squiz.

In SA it was a minimum of 9cm behind the rearmost openable window and must not exit to the left for something to do with it blowing onto the footpaths.

My ute currently runs a twin system that exits about 15 cm in front of the rear wheels on each side and I never had an issue with coppers not liking it.

I always thought a sedan with a tasteful side exiting system would look hot, 2 or 3 pipes exiting like the supercar's run. Although running them drivers side would make it rather hot.

HA HA.. honestly tho, there are exhaust shops out there that will whack a truck stack onto your ute. I've seen them on a Holden (yeah I know) VY V8 tonner. Looked a little corny, but did it sound meaty.
Then there's loser like an old workmate in Alice Springs with his 70's or 80's crap hilux with a little 4cyl motor and a friggin stack. Farted more that a 5 inch cannon on a 3cyl daihatsu.
I want side pipes on a shelby cobra, and by side pipes I meant they are on the outside of the car all the time

I thought it was 1ft behind the rearmost cabin opening - ie 1ft min behind the back of the rear doors.

man, where do you all get your info?

i emailed a bloke at DOT in QLD.

he deals with mods and the legalities.

I put this question to him.

It mus exit anywhere behind the rearmost seam of the car, AND can only exit on the driver side.

So, if you have a v8/v6, the left bank exhaust must meet up with the right hand side at some point.

Further, the top MUST be pointing toward the ground.

It would be fine on a sedan to dump behind the rear wheel.

Why is it illegal, tyre damage worries (heat related) or what?

CO2 killing the occupants of the car. You actually drift off onto a nice sleep, and don't wake up.

we have a bloke who comes into where i work (names withheld to protect the innocent...me), he owns a ba pursuit with twin pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels...right next to the pursiut badge on the side skirt...it is on the drivers side.... strange bit is while the side pipes are 100% real and functional.....he still has the original outlets in place on the rear end.

You think thats bad, my neighbours daughter (whos 19) drives a horrible Subaru ute (about 15 odd years old) thats covered in stickers, has a clapped motor, 2 big 1 inch thick UHF aerials, Mud flaps that go from corner to corner at the rear, and 2 massive truck stacks.....Its a bloody eye sore.
