in your opinion, what is the best engine in the last 20 or so years?
ideas like the 2l cosworth, evo 2l 4g63, rb26, windsor v8, 5 litre chev, 350 chev, etc... would like to know what people think... i believe the rb is the best motor... cant beat being told to leave a competition, being bood by the crowd it beat, and have a new championship/organisation formed to stop things like it returning... |

My vote would have to go to the new BMW V10 in the M5.
Everything I've read about it has been positive.......it's technically brilliant, heaps of grunt, forced MERCEDES to go forced Induction on all their top spec models to compete. A street production V10 that can REV to 8,250rpm and generate over 510 HP will always get my vote............. It also won engine of the YEAR in 2005 as voted by a panel of International judges in the automotive Industry........It beat the Ferrari F430 !!!!!!!

I can't add much as I'm no expert. But best engine I've driven was a BMW M roadster. "The M roadster features a 3.2-liter DOHC, 24-valve inline 6-cylinder engine with Double-VANOS "steplessly" variable valve timing, 315-horsepower, and 251 lb-ft of torque". The numbers aren't big but it was very smooth and very fast in such a light car...

Damn thats a hard one really, but ones thing for sure is it aint the Windsor, 350 chev or 308 holden.
Personally im a fan of the old 1UZ-FE, it was top notch stuff for 1989.

*350 small block Chevy - cheap to produce, good in anything - sports cars, race cars, motorhomes, four wheel drives, speed boats, cabin cruisers, family sedans - no matter what you put it in, its a good motor - fairly economical too
*5L V10 twin turbo diesel - Volkswagen - daring to do something different, great high tech motor good for what it's designed to do *BMW V10 *Mercedes twin turbo V12 I do think one of the best prototype engines produced lately is the Tri-flex V10 from the Ford Superchief concept - for power, and flexibility in a time of unsurety of the future in fuels, and being able to adapt to what we have now, future short term (Ethanol) and long term (Hydrogen) |

Id say the Ford Cosworth FVA/BD series/GAA/DF series (all essentially the same design)... The FVA and BD series being based on the kent engine, the DFseries being basically 2 FVA's on a common crank, and the GAA being an Essex V6 with FVA style heads.
a design that lasted in production and motorsport from the early 60's until the end of Group B rally cars in the mid to late 80's for the BD and into the early 90's for the DF series in Formula 1. With Cosworth still producing many of the parts used by these engines. The BDseries being one of the most copied engine by other manufacturers shows just how great the engine was. In fact anything done by cosworth is pretty damn good. |

The 1595cc 4 cylinder engine from the Landrover Series I
50bhp @ 4000rpm 80 lb/ft @ 2000rpm All this in a 1.3 tonne truck! Anyone want to take a stab at the 1/4 mile times? (yes I am joking...)

I think either the RB engines or the Beamer engines, as far as 6s are concern, for the V8s, Hmmmmmm it'd have to be either the 351 or the 308/304.

The 1UZ-FE was a really refined V8 engine for its time. outclassed everyone back in 1990 (and still does to this day). M5 V10 is a masterpiece and I would say the RX8 rotary. The BMW 6's are the best no doubt.

1.I'm going with the 1UZ-FE and VH41/45 from the nissans. All alloy, 6 bolt mains 4 cams etc etc. Can't wait till the aftermarket gets stronger for these particular lumps.
2.Oh but for sheer enjoyment of pure grunt i'd have to say the CLEVELAND gets my vote through and through. 3.The Holden 5 litre from VN onwards. Those heads are brilliant. Under-rated by the general motoring public. 4.400 chev. Some is good, more is even better.

The Ford/Cosworth DFV dominated F1 for so many years, is way over a 20 year old design tho as is my favorite street engine the mighty Clevo.

I'll also put in my vote for the mighty cleveland! nothing beats the sound of a wound up 351c with dual 3inches... (in my opinion of course)

I'll have to say the BMW I6 engine in any size.
Also the new AMG 6.3L V8 is an absolute ripsnorter of an engine. I think It beats the M5 V10 for drivability. Most car mags have criticised that engine for its lack of low end tractability. Also heard the engines one after the other at the GP, the AMG V8 sounds sooooo much fruitier!!! Could hardly hear the M5 even though the driver was fanging it. |

The Toyota 2ZZGE 1.8l non turbo 141kw at 8000rpm
1.8l fuel economy Turbo performance cheap insurance Lotus use it in supercharged form and NA as well. My next choice would be the Mini Cooper S 1275 engine the first hot hatch. Sounds awesome wth the right exhaust.
