Default home stereo hook-up issues :(

Hi all,

Am playing with my home stereo equiptment and doing a big upgrade from RCA's to S-Video cables. (Yes i know, i should've been asking these questions 10 years ago

I have ripped out the RCA's that go from DVD to the Reciever to the TV and replaced them with the S-Video cables. I am only getting picture.

Firstly, do S-Video cables carry sound or just image? If only image, then do i get my sound by hooking up the red and white RCA's again? (that would suck... doubling up on the amount of cables)

Secondly, i am currently getting only black and white when running a DVD through the S-Video cables. Why would that be?

Thanks,

yeah man s-vid is image transfer only. You will need to use the rca's for sound. As for the black and white make sure your region codes are matching between DVD and TV

Your reciever, depending on how new it is, should have digital inputs for the DVD player's audio component. These are either an optical input, in which case you will need an optical cable, or co-axial, which is basically one RCA cable. As for black and white images, well NTSC dvd's will come up in black and white on a pal TV, so as harpsta said, check that is it PAL dvd, as that is the standard in Australia.

Out of interest, was it worth the effort to do the cable change?? Or do you not notice the difference in picture quality.
