Default Do you change lanes midway through a turn?

As the title says... Do you change lanes midway through a turn?

I was going up William Street in Sydney today waiting at the lights to turn right. Next to me on the right side is an Astra also waiting to turn right. Lights turn green, and behold... moron in the Astra decides he needs to merge into my lane (into my rear doors, STBD quarter) midway through a turn. And he has the NERVE to beep me with his horn, arms waving. :

This has happened many a time and its only ever been Holden and Toyota drivers!

Pet hate of mine that one. Many a drongo in Canberra try to turn right from the outside/straight-thru lane or are in the right lane and move to the left lane of the road they are heading onto.

I saw someone in an old Merc drive dead straight through a chicane-style bend in the road, cutting off a Commodore. I don't know what was going on with this driver, because further down the road, when I was beside them, they decided to merge into my lane. I had to take evasive action by driving onto the wrong side of the road. Lucky nobody was coming the other way. I tooted my horn at them, so they went back into the left lane.

Were you turning from 2 lanes into 2 lanes or 3 lanes...??? If you were turning into 3 lanes, then you(as you were in the left of the right turn lanes) are required to go all the way to the left. The person in the right hand right turn lane is entitled to the 2 inside lanes. Found this out the hard way when my missus had the side of her car stoved in, in a 2 into 3 right turn situation.

Most morons will pick the shortest lane of traffic then as they round the bend try and force there way into the lane they want to get where they are going. See it everyday especialy as they see me with a trailer and assume l will hold them up for a couple of seconds and when l dont they try and push in front but end up behind where they started. : Some even wave there arms like it's there right to be in front of you. :thebirds:

No I don't as it's both illegal and dangerous. I hate people who do it. The amount of 'side swipes' due to this. It isn't hard to stay in your own lane.

There was some tosser up here this morning in an XB/XC 4 door with Victorian plates who decided that it would be a good idea not only to change lanes right in front of me during a turn, but to cut off 4 other lanes of traffic while doing it.

I cant believe you're even allowed to do that??

Worst ive seen was a land cruiser NOT EVEN in the turning lane who then decided they did want to turn right - and that the guy in the actual turning lane (me) could get f---ed because "i'm in a 4WD and i'm coming through".

GOD I HATE 4 WHEEL DRIVES IN THE CITY!!!!!!

If Im 100% certain that there is no other traffic at 2am I will straightline a 2 lane roundabout in the middle of no where. But thats the extent of it.

In Sydney .... I see it alot ... I am surprised that it wasn't a taxi driver though ... as they are the common ones that do it ... they also like to go around others on the wrong side of the road along George Street as well.

I had an idiot on Hunter Street next to me turning left onto George Street .... about to head south ... he was in the left left ... I was in the lane jsut to his right ... he realises that once on George Street he was in the BUS LANE ... and moves across to my lane without looking ... while I am there next to him. He was oblivious to anything going on around him ... and didn't even flinch to my use of horn and lights.

Always have to be on the look out for other people on the road in Sydney ... as they are the menace on the roads.

Another pet hate is people driving through intersections in which the lanes slant across slightly ... and the driver doesn't realise and they drive across and into your lane ... Chalmers/Elizabeth Street near Central Station is a classic for this too.

9 times out of 10 it's taxi drivers that are the culprits ... they don't care what's going on around them .... but the thing is they are the ones that should know better as they driver those roads everyday.

happens heaps here in melbourne. Its happened to me plenty, people cannot take a turn and stay in their own lane ...its as if the bmw has just turned into a B double mack truck and needs my lane as well to get iteslf around the turn. I tell you, you want to see road rage. When people blantantly do STUPID things like that! Bhaa, what can you say, really. Defensive driving courses alround and if you fail, take the licence off em. Driving is a life skill and provision should be made for those who are still not competant or just plain stupid to take up a DDC. Driving should treated as a skill and not a means.

I remember in Melbourne ... people would try and go around the left of you between parked cars and myself ... where there is no lane ... and push into the side of you ... it was crazy ... I eventually got annoyed of this ... and squeezed them out.

Melbourne drivers are bloody scarey ... I was happy to get back to Sydney traffic ... hee hee

One of my pet peevs is in Galwer - at the traffic lights at Julian tce and Murray st.

There's sort of a bend over the traffic lights and everyone cuts the bend through the left lane (turning down Julian tce) - which is usually where I am - up against the curb.

Oh, I also had another one awhile ago.. on the East end of Bathurst Street. The turning lanes were like this...

Left 1, Left 2, Right 2, Right 1

Commodore was in Left 1,
I was in Left 2.

Commodore decides at the green light, he wants to turn RIGHT!!!! FROM THE MOST LEFT LANE!!! : And because he knew he was in the wrong lane, he guns it off the line. How f-ing hard is it to take a detour and save yourself and others a heap of grief?

Answer: I change lanes ONLY when I'm 100% sure theres no-one else around, or watching.

We have a lot of 2 lane roundabouts out our way, and many drivers treat them as if there was only one lane. It is most frustrating.

There is a complete lack of driver education on how to turn around corners and roundabouts correctly. If only the repetitive TAC 'road safety' ads about 'knocking off 5' or whatever, were replaced by more useful driver education subjects such as this.

But then some drivers will never learn. These should be put off the road.

Yep , had it heaps of times , NO never did it myself (least don't think so) I used to travel from west Sydney (9-30am) to Forbes st Wooloomoloo (sp?) across the bridge , St. Leonards , Artarmon , Brookevale ,DeeWhy every Thursday in my XD ... Sold the XD to buy a house & bought an old HQ panelvan (not a straight panel on it) Amazing how everyone gave me "plenty of room" in that car :nutsycuck , they'd take one look and guessed they'd come off worse .
Lesson---- if you're driving a lot in the city , buy an old bomb , you can change lanes whenever you want ,and people stay away from you cos one more "ding" doesn't matter :eclipsee_

I try not to, but I've now got to the point that if an idiot is driving to close to me I'm going about to move further away from them if I'm within the lane markings - if they hit me then they hit me and it is there fault. I did find that when I used to have the explosives sticker on my car then people used to keep away, it was for when I had blackpowder in my car on the way to or from the shooting range - I fire muskets.

That law does not exist in WA, drivers here can not turn in there own lane, can not merge and definatly can not stay in there lane on a roundabout,.

You would not dare turn right into a dual lane road if there was traffic on the other side turning left.
Indicators are another mystery here, normally you know if someone wants to change lanes by the way they are turning there head, looking, looking, then 1 flash and there in front of you. Gees, doesnt' anyone in this state know that indicators can be used to indicate your INTENTION. I WILL let you in if I know your coming. And while i'm on it, those big signs before a roundabout with a circle and the lanes marked, well we dont need em, because people in the left lane just turn right anyway. And they are normally the ones that indicate to turn left on the way in.

Sorry to rant, but I have had one of them days too.
It seems common courtesy has all but dissapeared on our roads, and everyone wants to be first in line, with no patience at all. (Maybe the moron today just did not want to look at the back of my 86 hilux and liked the skyline rear end better... loser!)

All the best getting it sorted Pertuan

I don't believe the recklessness of some forum members. Lanes are not hard to stay in, they are wider than all sedans. Why be so slack that you much use more than one lane? No wonder there are so many sideswipes at round abouts!

Q. What happened and the round about?
A. Oh I didn't see the other vehicle..

I don't want to go into this because I see so much of it. The one that annoys me is the ones who couldn't be bothered pulling over to the left to turn left. When there's a pedestrian crossing the road they're turning into they stop halfway through the turn with their tail out in the middle of the road holding everybody up.

As a variation on the theme - and talking about BMWs who think they're trucks, my favourite is the hairpins on Galston Gorge in Sydney and the morons in Corollas etc who think they're driving a semitrailer and pull out onto the opposite side to go around the bend. I can take the bends in the big Territory hugging the inside so WTF do they think they're doing. The best they'll achieve is to collect someone coming the other direction who comes round the blind bend and finds them face to face on the wrong side of the road!
