Melbourne to Bathurst

Is anyone driving from Melbourne to Bathurst for the 1000?

What's the best route? Olympic Hwy? How long does the drive normally take?

Ant help would be appreciated!

Id say turn off the the hume at Yass, then go boorowa,cowra,bathurst..

Take this as a guide only. Last year we had a left and the map said right

Close call. 1 petrol Stop about 8 1/2 Hours With 2 pee stops.

Probably leaving mid fri arvo if we drive otherwise i might go up earlier in one of the Transporters.

Nugget what is the road like though.I remember going on a certain rd one year and it was a shocker.I usually go up the Olympic Hwy.Approx 9 Hrs with a couple of pitstops.

I went up hume through Albury and turn off at coolac then go up through young and cowra, its a long trip. I drove it on my own last year from geelong (mate conviently lost licence). Iam heading up ths year too, getting pumped for it.

Boorowa rd is a lot better than it has been previously, helped by the lack of rain over the last couple of years. About 2.5 hours to Bathurst from the Hume.

Should do a vic cruise to the mountain!

I went up this way a few years ago, I think it took 8hr from memory, only stopped for a coffee at Holbrook & got there at 12:30pm

Havent been on it for a while,but as another has said,it appears not too bad,all the time saved would be on the hume,as its a good road,and on the NSW side anyway,you can sit on 120 without fear of being booked..
This is why I would use it..

That's the way to go. I went that way last year and the road is perfectly fine. We had a ball thrashing a nice new clubbie all the way.

For the record the Boorowa Rd at the moment (as of Monday) is undergoing roadworks. Exposed gravel in sections near the town for about 10kms maybe? They did have a water truck though....

Wonder if i could park my ute in the back of the plane too? Funniest thing is, it'll probably take me 8 hours to drive, so by the time you drive to the airport, check in, catch you plane, fly, land, get your bags, find the penguin holding the sign with your name on it, and get to the track i'll already be trackside in my deck chair anyway!!!

I find it very use full for planning long trips its usualy faily accurate.

Two alternatives:

Option 1 (the direct route): Follow the Hume Highway to Albury-Wodonga. Turn left onto the Olympic Way and follow it all the way to Cowra. Turn right at Cowra onto the mid-Western Highway and follow it to Bathurst.

Option 2 (slightly longer but quicker route): Follow the Hume Highway to just past Coolac. Turn left onto Cootamundra Road and follow it to Cootamundra. At Cootamundra turn right onto the Olympic Way and follow it all the way to Cowra. Turn right at Cowra onto the mid-Western Highway and follow it to Bathurst.

I prefer option 2 as the Hume Highway from Albury to Coolac is mostly dual carriage with an 110km/hr speed limit. The Olympic Way is single carriage with an 100km/hr speed limit and you have to slow to 60km/hr often for every residental area along the way.

I allow 10 hours for this trip as I like to stop often. The trip can be done in 9 hours comfortably.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. Does anyone know if the Lachlan Valley Way (B81 - Yass to Boorowa) has been resurfaced in the last few years (ie. Low profile tyre friendly)? We normally turn off at Coolac, but taking a different car this year. The road from Coolac to Cootamundra (Gundagai Rd) can be a bit choppy in places and the Olympic is mostly coarse surfaced.

I have used them all over the years but more recently have preferred to use the Coolac turn off and go up to Cootamundra as I found the roads better that way.
As i have done the journey by myself over the past few years i now find it easier to fly , but it's nearly just as exhausting by the time you get there and back, only thing is you don't have a vehicle to worry about.

I did the Lachlan Valley way about 3 months ago in my Megane with 18in tires and a full car load with the missus and 2 kids and it wasn't too bad. Typical country road but no big potholes and no real bad sections. There was 2 lots of roadwork back then but nothing too major and we did the trip with no incident.

We went to Parkes and return on Sunday, the Boorowa road is as good as it gets, no current roadworks and mostly smooth.

Went up via Coolac turn-off on the way to Bathurst and came home via Boorawa on way home (way up was via Melb and overnight at Albury, way home was direct Cowra to Sale, via Cooma.

This was in my Focus ST with the 18" rims. No discernibile difference for me either way.

Will be heading up and back via Boorawa this year in the XR8.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out that road surface is no longer an issue. My daily is a blown 300C SRT8 with 22s. Piston number 7 has decided it doesn't want to live on this planet anymore. I'm assuming it was most likely a bad batch of fuel. Maybe. Anyhow, with the Hemi needing a rebuild, looks like we'll be taking the Missus' Astra.
I'll just plot in route and see which way turns out the quickest.
