I agree mate. Thats why my whole family now do minimal shopping at major supermarket chains like Woolworths and Coles. I don't know if this helps our farmers, but you get better foods by shopping at butchers and fruit markets. If anyone knows a company that gives our farmers a better go, let us know!

Yeeh, i had a good conversation with a farmer customer of mine the other day. There is some politics in that game for sure.
Too many teeth, deformed horn, too fat, too skinny and they get bugger all per KG.

Its like an industry, if you are in the trade you get discounts.
Although I did buy some beef eye fillet tonight, $11.00 for two tiny bits was a bit harsh. Scotch Fillet was on special though, only $35 for a tray containing 8 pieces...LOL

Well things are only going to get worse, since butchers are to be scrapped out of Coles stores, goes the rumour, and for it all to come in packaged.
My parents do the best thing. Every friday they go to the vic market, and use the supermarket for the other things which can't be found at the makret. Also, if you become friends with the butcher, they will hold onto the good pieces of meat for you, regardless of who comes in before you. |

Not to through a spanner in the works, but from my experience with the beef industry in WA its not that dire. Sure the margin between live weight p/kg and cut meat on a tray in coles is huge yes, but there are plenty of steps that must be taken to get the meat from the farms loading ramp, to the check out.
Alot of weight is lost purely in the slaughter of the animal, the difference between live weight and dressed weight of a carcass is quite considerable. Not to mention the animals that go for $1/kg are generrally the poorer quaility animals. There are more facts to weigh up from both sides, and i understand farmers are having troubles but there are more people in play in the industry than just farmers and coles. |

The price of beef isn't $1/kg.
Abattoir staff must be paid Transport costs The fact that not every kilo of the animal is used able meat, the stomache contents plus bone make up a huge amount of an animals weight.. Plus other factors i'm sure i've missed |

I am carnivorous. But it annoys me that big chains dont support our local farmers more instead. I mean its not hard to be fair is it, or isnt that profitable?

Roma Saleyards holds a weekly store sale, and a Prime Sale, which meatworks buyers frequent. For the 28/11/06 Store Sale Rates- http://www.maranoa.org.au/sale/Roma%...le%20Rates.doc For the 23/11/06 Prime Sale Rates- http://www.maranoa.org.au/sale/Fat%20Sale%20Rates.doc Both in Word Format. I can confirm these tomorrow if you like, and also post the rough conversion rate for over the hooks prices that the meat processors work on. Sheep were/are being sold in NSW for $1/head. They were severely drought affected stock, which most farmers could not hold onto any longer. Not much meat available there. All skin and bone. Most of the meat you see in Woolworths is prime fat lamb, which are currently selling for around $70/Head. My best advice, shop at a local Butcher, not at Woolworths. I pay $6.99 for Teys Brothers Whole Rumps, sliced free! Cheers

Local butcher, local green grocer. Its unfortunate they will have to disappear before most people realise their importance. When theyre gone, we will know all about it.
its not just cost either, the quality of supermarket product looks good, but tastes god awful by comparison. to make a comparison, I have been eating 'free range' eggs for years. I actually buy those vegetarian eggs, yeah I know, but its the chooks that are the vegetarians ( i buy em because they are free of anti-biotics and hormones and crap). Anyway, a mate has chooks and I get my eggs from him now, man what a difference. It was like 'hey I remember eggs'. |

The meat has to be cut up, refrigerated, transported, packaged, then sold (think infrastructure, staff, rents, salaries ect.) and then still turn a profit (supermarkets are a business not a charity).
I still think its a rip off and only buy meat from my local butcher but I just think there is more too it than a current affairs shows lead on.

It worries me, as a consumer, that we don't know the history of these boxes, so I'll pay extra at my local butcher to make sure I get fresh cut meat. |

mmm this is where I miss living in Victoria... My best mates parents owned a dairy farm (their grandad run it) = free milk straight from the cow, couldn't beat that... and his parents worked at an abbatoirs = free meat.
Not to mention all the fun it was playing in sheds full of hay bails and running around a huge complex that killed things haahah. |

the real supermarket rip off is fruit and vegies.
potatoes have been between $2.20 and $3.00 for over 7 years here in Hervey bay, each time i ask why prices are so hi its either the drougt or the floods, i watched an SBS show about 6 years ago when potatoes were over $2.50 a kilo here that siad the farmers were near the end of there woolworths contracts. that were $.17 (yes 17 cents a kilo)for all there crop that year,i never brought another vegie from woolies unless we really needed them for tea that night after that. is there any farmers on here who can confirm the price's the big supermarkets actually pay now for vegies?

So if you dont like what the supermarket has to offer, dont shop there. Fairly simple.
Personally, i like the convinience. Grab my milk, food, veggies and meat - go to the checkout, swipe the card and i'm done. Although it's not like i have a choice. Most of my shopping is done on the way home from work. By 7.30 at night, the local butcher is long gone. Which is just great. Woolies is open til 9pm every night of the working week. I wont apologise for not using a local butcher if he/she isnt open when i go shopping.
