Yeah, that would surely bring the price of a new Falcon down. But, do you think that the 7 speed gearbox's are going a little too far? I've never driven a Falcon with a ZF in it, but i have heard nothing but praise of it: how it mates with the engine perfectly and how smooth it is to drive. What do you think?

could be a great opportunity... if it can reduce the costs to produce the 6 speed falcons (without sacrificing the shift quality) then thats great for competitiveness

Sounds good for Ford anyway, six speeders across the board. The cheaper 6 speeder would be absolutely perfect for XT's, Futura and Fairmont 6's and have cheaper parts and according to the article have quite a few similarities with the well known BTR 4 speeder.

What the article didn't mention and which is something I have mentioned before is that the DSI 6 spd has te ability to be made into a soft hybrid.

This involves replacing the torque convertor with an electric starter/motor/generator and has the ability to reduced consumption by 25% plus and increase acceleration by 20%.

This was reported last year in the Australian Newspaper Automoive section. Apparently it had been tested in a "2 tonne Korean SUV" which is obviously going by the article in this link; a Ssanyong product.

C'mon Ford, bring on a 5-6-7 spd auto as standard with the option of soft hybrid and team it with a Direct Injection motor and you would have to be on a winner.

What's with all these fancy automatic gearboxes? Whats wrong with the 3 speed auto ford used in the mid 70's? or the ford-o-matic 2 speed from the 50's?

The ZF is the best transmission I have ever come across! I'm a big believer in, if it works don't mess with it... Going the cheaper option can only be a bad thing and a step backward for Ford..

My 2.234 Cents anyway

I think it would be good Australia if Ford & Holden started to use these boxs.

Im all for anything that boost Australian content even if its not quite as good. The ZF is nice, but not breathtaking - yes I have driven it in XR6T,XR8 and GT several times.

The 4 speed changes beautifully so one would assume that the newer boxes are even better. As for 7 gears...I reckon 5 is well and truley sufficient. 6 and more gears is more of a marketing thing than anything else.

Agree with you 100%, i think 6 is one to many, but it seems to be the norm these days, doesnt matter to much as long as its a good 6 speeder.

7 Speeds seems stupid to me, even for torqueless useless motors youd be better off with a CVT.

This week, Ssangyong announced that DSI Australia would soon be offering a six-speed automatic built in the same casing as the current four-speed. Because it won't require any modification to the chassis or floorpan....
It's be awesome if it'd fit in place of the older BTRs found in early-mid-90s Falcons. i.e. a straight-swap.
